My bets are on Hogan by a 8-10% margin. I will say that my voting precinct this morning was completely empty. I'm not sure this helps either candidate.
St Nicholas. 10+ people working and I was the only voter at 8am. Hopefully people will get out and take part in the process.
Stephen, my office is Precinct 7T today - I'll be happy to give you any updates I can based on observations.
And I think Mr. Brown himself was standing out on the corner of Main and 1st this morning.
All Alvin Brown signs that I observed just yesterday were pulled in the middle of the night. Hogan signs plastered everywhere.
There was a lone Alvin Brown Sign waver at Chaffee and Normandy this morning.
Precinct 3A (Atlantic and Hodges): mine was the 59th ballot read as of 8:15 this morning. 2 cars pulled up in the 5 minutes I was there.
I seen several Alvin Brown getting on the on ramp of baymeadows rd and 95 this morning. I also seen a sign off 95 near that said "Tea Party Mike". It was handwritten. White with red letters.

Classy.
How late are the polls open today? 7:00pm still? Or do they close earlier?
The polls will close at 7pm, according to supt. of elections.

Nope. I'm reasonably sure it was him - had the profile and the paunch. :D
And I know around 8 this morning the Hogan family was in front of the Chick Fil A on Roosevelt - which is where I normally stop for a bite coming in to school/work, but avoided it today.

I have been contacting all my friends the past weeks, encouraging them to get out and vote for Brown. All of them have so far. I have two friends that are going today after work. We gotta pull the upset. This is a must. Sadly I did not vote in the last mayors election. I was young (early 20's) and I really didnt care. Now that Im 29 and realize what is going on, I will never sit on my duff again and not get out and vote.
Got some encouraging news from a friend in Mandarin who is fairly conservative. Says that he voted Brown and that a lot of the Olde Mandarin people he and his family know are voting Brown. Thinks it is more to do with fear of Hogan than Brown, but hey votes are votes.
This is a guy who didn't even vote for Obama if that tells you anything.

Dude, THAT is exactly the kind of voice that should be projected to the masses! Voter apathy is a killer, and if you want your voice to be heard by those in power THIS is where you start - by telling them who you want to have the power!
I am happy to see that people of this city are ready for the next level. It is beyond color and political party. Its about who can the job done and take us where we need to go. We will find out today whether this city is ready for change. I know I am. I was born and raised here and want only the best. Im tired of being the laughing stock of florida.
Alvin Brown sign waver at Union and Market at 0730.
7T precinct - 11 a.m. We've had a steady flow of voters here, about 1 every few minutes. Lots of seniors, but a decent number of younger voters too. Of course this is in a senior center so it's busy anyway, and the lunch crowd will be here soon. I'll quietly duck out then.
I've heard from the receptionist an estimate of 80 voters.
Some interesting data being released from the SOE.

I sure hope we get more of that; but it is very encouraging.
really....you think District 1 would be heavily Brown?
I went door to door in District 1 during the primary, I had a hard enough time trying convince those people to vote for Moran.
I'm thankful he didn't automatically plunk district 14 as a red zone... a number of us who can walk to where he'll be tonight are not 'with' him.
Oh, the official for NOON at 7T was 110 votes.
Uh-oh.
Additionally, just because a district is a different color, doesn't mean that's the actual outcome. We aren't gonna know until tonight. Exit polls are useless, and speculation is just going to lead you to bite your fingernails off. The most important thing you can do is get out and vote.
So roughly 36,500-and-change votes case as of the last count/update. Does anyone know about how that equates in terms of total turnout?

there's something like 550,000 registered voters in Duval...so including early/absentee votes, we are close to 20% turnout so far

Yeah, the 6 point Hogan trend is holding through the first 42 precincts coming in. Not to sound too optimistic, but the core districts are usually the last to report their results. It's still anybody's ballgame.

Hard to get a word in on this thread. ;D
I think at least 6 of the remaining 10 precincts should lean towards Brown. Hopefully a lot of people voted in those precincts to finally overtake Hogan.

Most likely they'll go Brown. Of concern is 13X and 11T, although I think the latter will go to Hogan. Don't know the population stats for those two districts offhand.
I think 13X is sparse, given it hugs the south side of JTB... Might not amount to many votes.
Jumping back and forth between MJ and the Election results channel leaves no time to get up for refreshment. You guys are driving me nuts.
I am still holding out for history to be made :)
This should show hogan that half of the city does not care for that tea party stuff and just wants a better city. Shows him that half of the city does care about the downtown districts. Shows hogan maybe he should debate more.
i'll be relieved no matter what when this is over, the question is will I be relieved AND happy
SOE site isn't loading for me - must mean an update coming.
I seriously hope Hogan loses ..just because
I'm just glad that the vote gap closed from over 7K to under 1200, at least at one point. Very tight and well-contested race.
Exciting stuff for us nerd types. :D
t-u just said hogan lead down to 400 votes
THATS WHATS UP!!!
Hogan doesn't deserve to win this, IMO. He didn't participate in most of the debates, he ran a smug campaign, and he just carried himself as if he was meant to win it.
Then again, Brown was quite the milquetoast at times, so there's something to be said there too...
Sadly Cooly, I don't think Hogan gives a rats ass about the other half of the city. >:(

A
provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there are questions in regards to a given voter's eligibility. A provisional ballot would be cast when:
The voter refuses to show a photo ID (in regions that require one)
The voter's name does not appear on the electoral roll for the given precinct.
The voter's registration contains inaccurate or out-dated information such as the wrong address or a misspelled name.
The voter's ballot has already been recorded
And
unscanned votes are obvious.

I wonder if there's a problem with the tech rovers getting thru to the SOE modem. It normally doesn't take this long... UNLESS - you all know there are 'drop zones' for precincts to deliver their machines to. The tech collects each machine and calls them in one at a time to SOE to upload the results.
Maybe some of these precincts have yet to get to their drop zone?
Or maybe they're having a problem dialing in?

That's odd that Jerry is saying that. People who vote a provisional ballot have, I believe, until noon on Thursday to prove their eligibility. This typically involves bringing in proof of address, etc.
If you voted on a provisional ballot do whatever you need to do to have your vote counted in this race!

Brown had a better campaign, he said & did better things, he didn't insult George Bush or John McCain or any other republican. All he did was say he really wanted Jacksonville to be a BETTER place. That was his main agenda to me. Hogan seemed to want to take power away from the government, by excepting less money from tax payers, tax payers who already pay a very low tax. Many people voted for Hogan because he represented AntiObama..which is really stupid in civic government.

Fwiw, that is ALL precincts reporting.
So doing some quick math, there are less than 1,600 provisional and absentee ballots left to be counted tomorrow morning. With a 600 vote lead going into it, the provisionals and absentees would have to go disproportionatelt Hogan for him to win now. But still too close to call really. Especially with this still triggering a full recount by being withing 1/2 of 1%

What would I want personally? A dick-smacking mandate against all the B.S. teabaggery going around. While I'm elated that Brown may actually have a shot at this, I'm still disappointed there were enough weirdos to make it a 50/50 recount race in the first place. But yeah, this is probably as good as we coukd have hoped for, I am pleasantly surprised.
My understanding is that the absentee votes in question are not from people who mailed in an absentee ballot. They are from the people who requested an absentee ballot and then showed up at the polls to cast a vote. They won't count them until it can be confirmed that they did not also mail in an absentee ballot.

Better than reality TV!
But for realsies... I have to say I'm a bit proud of Jacksonville tonight. This is proof positive that things are swinging back in the right direction despite the LOUD NOISES coming from the Right Wing Hate Machine. That we can elect a Democratic black mayor in this town? Mind = BLOWN.

Well, speaking personally, I think Hogan's anti-downtown commercial easily turned off more voters than the 600 vote spread now. I think that will go down as a serious political mistake.

Here's a few to start:
Brown Turns Jax Upside Down!
Brown Makes Hogan Frown!
Hogan's "No Show" Campaign Shown Up on Election Night!
Hogan Taken Down by Downtown!
Brown Delivers Brown!
All of those who threw in with Hogan opportunistically just because he was bound to win are probably wondering what the hell just happened. I am mad Wayne Weaver hedged his bets with Hogan.
At least Taylor was more likely to be indicted or arrested for something in the near future, so we could've gotten another shot at that seat with another candidate.

My understanding is that the absentee votes in question are not from people who mailed in an absentee ballot. They are from the people who requested an absentee ballot and then showed up at the polls to cast a vote. They won't count them until it can be confirmed that they did not also mail in an absentee ballot.
I was confused about what Abel/Corrine were talking about here, too. You cannot vote an absentee ballot on election day. You may surrender the absentee ballot and vote a regular ballot.
If you do not surrender the ballot, and the precinct captain determines that the SOE office has not received your absentee ballot, then you can vote a regular ballot and the SOE will reject your illegal absentee ballot if it is received later.
Was Corrine talking about provisional ballots?
just reported....recount will cost $100,000...but the person losing can choose not to have the recount done...we're about to find out how serious Hogan is about cutting spending!

One thing, as a Republican I'm tired of Hogan being called the fiscal conservative 'tea-party' candidate. He was ENDORSED by the 2 BIGGEST public unions in the city. Those 'conservatives' dumb enough to vote for him simply because he had an R next to his name were willfully ignorant morons.
QuoteFrom our Dan Scanlan at SOE: The three-man Canvassing Board is SOE Jerry Holland, County Judge Brent Shore and Council vice president Stephen Joost.

Shore is the chairman and he will decide what challenges go through and listen to them.

The three members will hand review 642 provisional and approximately 1,000 absentee ballots, then all of them will be machine counted. If there is a recount needed, it will then proceed.

No, Jacksonville has never elected an African-American mayor.
+1,000 to FutureJax. By no earthly standard was Hogan a fiscal conservative. Keeping taxes low and fiscal conservatism are two entirely different animals in this case.
I think it shows just what Stephen talked about after the 1st general. That the town is more moderate than people perceive it to be. And what voters hopefully just decided was that the moderate was the better man for the job than the bible thumping nutter.

It will. Part of the reason is the rebuke of Rick Scott and all things Tea Party, and for the implications it has for 2012 Presidential race, given Duval is a GOP stronghold (voter registration is meaningless). Plus as the first D mayor in awhile, and the first A-A mayor.

Im surprised Lake didn't already know that. I have nieces and a nephew in Jax. I think its dope they may get to see a black mayor. I have to say man I did not think Brown had a chance. I thought Jax was too backwood too outdated too conservative to make this sort of choice. I was mistaken...maybe I should have more faith next time. And I do not think we should bash the Hogan supporters (STEPHAN DARE) Brown is winning, and if he wins will be everyones mayor regardless of who you all voted for.
Assuming the final count favors Alvin, this will be the first time I've met and spoken to a mayor before he was elected. I hope he remains as approachable and individually engaging after getting a new office with the big lock on the door and linebackers and spokespersons to run interference.

Wishful. Thinking.
Brown ran as a "conservative" D. He ran on a "no tax increase," "cut the waste" platform. At the end of the day, with the positions they took, he and Hogan probably agreed on 95% of the details (admittedly unscientific). Basically, "same guy" resulted in people looking at that last 5% - and the results demonstrate that as it's basically a complete, 100% down the middle split. Also, let's not fool ourselves - if this election took place in November, Brown would have lost by double-digits. Moving the election was a HUGE help there.
So let's not project our little big town's result nationally. WAY too many variables to extrapolate that way.

It is totally bogus to say that a November election would have been different. Typically off-year elections show a drop off in Democratic voting.
This is indeed an example that the Tea Party is fading in it's influence. Let's see how the narrative develops.

I'm not so sure that it's the fact that their influence is waning. I really feel that it's gotten a lot of normally apathetic progressives enraged to the point of action. Either way, it's a good thing. I want an energized electorate.

Whatever helps you sleep at night...Getting 8,800 votes against another Republican in a conservative area isn't exactly a victory.
Maybe the local Tea Party should start to focus more of its efforts on Lake City, Palatka, Waldo, etc and let the big boys and girls in the big city play.
Everyone pay attention to what happens at the canvassing board tomorrow. The TU will be blogging it.
It appears that there are 642 provisional ballots and about 1,000 absentee ballots to be counted.
Although the provisional ballots will break heavily for Brown, only a handful of these will be counted. Most will be thrown out.
Most of the absentee ballots, however, should count. Hogan took the absentee ballots that have already been counted by a 2-to-1 margin. If that holds tomorrow, then things could get very close.
Yes and Taylor out did Daniels at a similar ratio in the absentee voting...he might actually be able to close 150 votes....but I think Hogan closing 600 votes against Brown is much less likely.
Lets say it does go 2:1 on the 1000 absentees...Hogan 666, Brown 334...that would be a gain of 332 for Hogan...but not nearly enough...then figure the provisional ballots should favor Brown....Hogan cant win....
If you apply it to Taylor though...after counting absentees he goes from being down 150 to being up 150....and then the ratio of provisional ballots that are accepted and for whom becomes paramount....

Aside from that, what a night for Jacksonville! Everyone is going to take credit for what happened tonight. MJ, the gay community (which got engaged in a local race for the first time ever) - a lot of people.
The people who made tonight happen are the ones who donated and volunteered and voted. It was a big win - and there's credit to go around to everyone who make it possible. Great job, everyone!
Quote from: stephendare on May 18, 2011, 12:30:13 AM
It was such a thin margin, and the amazing thing about it was that it was the result of a lot of very small groups working together that have never worked together before.
Without any one of those groups, Hogan would have won.
And it felt good to see so many people who were meeting each other for the first time.
It was really a beautiful beautiful night, and I don't know how you felt about it, but I agree with your earlier conversation. I think this has the ability to be the beginning of a political realignment in the city.
I concur completely. For the first time, we all pulled on the same oar and this is what happens when our side decides to do that. And our "side" is a lot bigger than it used to be. And it's not about political parties and identity politics - I think for the first time ever.
Now it's about what's better for Jacksonville. The realignment is all about true civic purpose and connecting the thinking about what's better to the doing something about making it better. It's amazing to live in Jacksonville at this time in our history when we've overcome so much - just like that - and are poised to start the fourth chapter in our civic history. This is our time.

QuoteDUVAL COUNTY, Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland announced 65,012 voters have cast a ballot either by voting early or by absentee for Jacksonville's 2011 Unitary General Election.
As of Book Closing, April 18th, there are 518,620 registered voters in Duval County eligible to cast a ballot in Jacksonville’s 2011 Unitary General Election on May 17th. At the conclusion of early voting on Sunday, May 15th at total of 38,562 voters cast a ballot during the two week period. In addition, 26,450 Absentee Ballots were verified by signatures and have been validated to be opened and processed by the Canvassing Board. This brings the total number of ballots cast by Absentee Ballots or during Early Voting to 65,012, which is 12.5% of eligible voters. The numerical breakdown of ballots cast by party is: Democrats 29,705, Republican 29,035 and independents/npa 6,272.
QuoteHogan built a lead with early voting and absentee results, leading by as much as 6 points when the first numbers came in. But it tightened though the night, with Brown strongholds in the urban core pushing him to the slim lead.

All I can say is WOW. I went to bed last night with Hogan leading by a few thousand and figured that was it. This morning I turn on the news and Mr. Brown is up by 600. Amazing. Where did those votes come from? What where the last precincts to turn in ballots?
jrg
I guess the urban core does matter.
Alvin Brown's team has moved into a "count every vote" posture. Democratic election lawyer and stalwart Leslie Goller has been keeping her eye on the canvassing board and its work.
Once all the votes are counted, and recounted if necessary, Alvin feels confident that he'll be certified as the winner. Aside from that, not a lot new to report yet this morning.
I really hope this doesn't turn into a recount nightmare! I dont want my joy spoiled by any negativity.
That's my hope as well. I think Alvin will have enough votes from the counting to avoid that. Hogan can certainly concede at any point if he's serious about saving the taxpayer the approximately $100K it would cost to recount. If Brown is over the recount threshold, Hogan can still request one, but then he's on the hook for the cost instead of the taxpayer.

Yay for that!!
But I concur with Jimmy that it was a whole bunch of groups finally pulling together.
Let me add that we probably saw a larger turnout of women too..............with that war on women in Tallahassee, women have grown weary of ultra-conservative rule.
I couldn't believe those numbers last night...........went to the movies with my hot date at 9 PM, and Hogan was still leading. What made it worse was that when I asked at the theater if they knew the latest results...........I got a smug reply that Mike Hogan was in the lead..........no mention of Alvin at all.
I replied with disappoval saying that I had hoped we would be going in a new direction in Jacksonville.
So first thing I did when I got home was check those numbers again...........and yay for us!!!!
Alvin had turned things around. I am sooooooo happy this morning. It is beyond belief. I was getting ready to check out CA again........since I just couldn't stand things going from bad to worse in FL and then in Jax too. Now I am staying put and will be enjoying the city I finally grew roots. I even had 3 grandchildren born here.........it would have been hard to leave ;)
I would love to have watched homophobe Clay Yarborough's face as he watched Hogan's numbers come in. It's a shame his sad, decaying district elected him again, but his face must have been ashen realizing his future as Bigot In Waiting was taking a big hit. The tide has turned, people. We can demand more and the Hogan-Yarborough-First Baptist Church days of running the show without push back are long gone. Go Alvin. Bring it home!
Good summary Stephen.
Voters owe Metrojacksonville a huge thank you for the years of election coverage.
That's the kind of election that reminds you that your vote actually does matter.
No matter who comes out on top, the election was the easy part. The hard work is ahead.
Let's just hope its Alvin, so that work is a little easier.

Another reason this is not such a defeat for the Tea Party: they did pretty well in council races, knocking off Jack Webb in Mandarin.
I'm not sure that all Tea Party candidates ought to be grouped together in a local election, though. There's a big difference between pro-union, anti-core Mike Hogan and pro-core, pro-preservation, fiscal conservative Robin Lumb.
Wow, it's a beautiful morning in the River City
Not to take anything away from Hogan's remarks last night,
but Browns are better and more telling:
Quote
"We want to made sure every vote is counted," Brown told his supporters. "We as a city will get the results together and unite the city behind the winner."
I believe he truly cares about this city's future, whether he's mayor or not.

Very well said!
Speaking personally, even if Brown does absolutely nothing, then we're still better off than we would have been with sprawl-loving, downtown-killing, good-ole-boy Hogan. On his worst day, Brown may accomplish nothing, whereas Hogan's entire platform was wrapped around killing what remains of downtown and continuing to fund unsustainable sprawl. If Brown wins following the recount, we really doged a major bullet on this one.

Mike Hogan (REP)

We just have to hope and pray that the powers that be won't be (in any way) involved in the recount! (remember the election of 2000?) Hell, it cost a 100 grand to do it! And that would be a strain on the city's budget! NO RECOUNTS!!!

Stephen, I was following as many tweets and such from that party last night (and Alvin's too), and I can't say I was surprised by all the slings being thrown around by Sleiman and the like. I didn't know Hogan himself said anything, but I know his advisors and 'buddies' did.
But far as conceding... "Pride goeth before the fall" they say; you'd think Mr. Hogan would've heard that one somewhere.
Dumb question...What exactly is NW Jax...that is everything north of I10 west of US1??
Speaking of Sleiman, I'm hopeful that we will get a quick resolution to the eternal Landing parking battle with a new administration.
Mr. Hogan has conceded the race to Mayor-Elect Alvin Brown. It's over.

He might have to step on some toes to get the job done, but it will be all worth it in the end. If we give him the full eight years, I think we will be a different city when its all over. Im excited and ready!

I would be interested to see or hear (it may have already been mentioned in this thread, sorry) as to how many Republicans crossed over to vote for Brown. I was one of them and I know several more who did as well. While that isn't a scientific survey, I have heard from others that they know of Reps who did. What was even more interesting in the conversations was that the folks I spoke to said that they did so after going to the Godbold fundraiser. I am just curious to know.

Apparently, I am going to be held personally responsible for what happens to this city in the next 4 years. I'm wondering if taking that responsibility means that I get a share of this person's profits over the next 4 years when Alvin helps us pull out of this recession?

I don't want to take anything away from Alvin Brown because I am excited for his victory, but a lot of votes may have been less of a vote for Brown and more of a vote against Hogan.
Which I don't really know if there is anything wrong with that. It shows that the city is tired of the do-nothingness that seems to have plagued this city for the past few decades and is ready to move in a *new* direction.

I know several Republicans that voted for Alvin Brown. They were tired of Hogan refusing to debate and then denigrating downtown. If we can get a great downtown we will not need to lure new business with city money.

Of course DINOS (Democrat who crosses over occasionally) ;D
holy crap...Channel 4 just aired part of the exclusive interview w/ Hogan...he very politely dissed Brown...said the more he campaigned with him, the less he knew him...saud he had some conflicting ideas and will be cuirous to see how Brown governs.
Sorry, that should be DINOS (Democrats who used to ocassIoNally vote rebublican because they lived in JacksOnville and So thought if they did otherwise their vote would not count).
I know several Republicans who crossed over. I am registered NPA. No Party Affiliation.
I really think this is a time of political realignment. Parties matter less and less and less in these local elections. My ballot was all over the place. And I'm theoretically a die-hard Dem.
This election is proof that party affiliation was not the deciding factor.. for once.. Thank god!
Ch 4 ran a neat story. The % turnout was much higher in the districts that went heavily for Brown.
In other words Hogan supporters were more likely to stay home yesterday.

Well.... It is done and I refuse to bash him or his supporters. They very well could have won, but finally enough of us united on our determination to change the course of Jacksonville. We should remain on course and ready to help our Mayor-elect to transform this great City to what it should be , instead of the continuation of the same ole same ole. As Hogan supporters would expect us to do, had he won, they should , eventually embrace this change and opportunity. I wish Alvin Brown MUCH SUCCESS !
Audrey Moran said it best in her concession speech. Partisan politics have no place at the local level.
Glad that so many freethinking people in Jacksonville decided to cross over.

^Same here, I guess I am officially a RINO now. In fact, I got a very scathing email from someone today accusing me of that. Apparently, I am going to be held personally responsible for what happens to this city in the next 4 years. I'm wondering if taking that responsibility means that I get a share of this person's profits over the next 4 years when Alvin helps us pull out of this recession?
I'm still tickled at the idea that I'm a "limousine liberal" because I supported Audrey and then Alvin. I can think of two things wrong with that statement.
Yes, now that many Republicans and conservatives found THEMSELVES as the target of Tea Party nonsense, maybe they will seek to take back the party from the asylum inmates that took it over.

+1
And FWIW, South Park did an excellent job on the teabaggers last night. Hilarious episode.
I can tell you I have some friends who are giving me a really hard time for supporting Brown. I tell them I had to do what I felt was best for Jacksonville's future, like or leave it and move on!
I think the last bell has been wrung at the local tea party. Between the TP and the CTDC, they had their hats handed to them on election day. They'll try to take some credit, but they actually crashed and burned. Good riddance.
And Billie "Silly" Tucker has been showcased in a negative light, with her own juvenile words and actions. She's done.

What do you call a Republican who doesn't bother to vote at all?
The same thing you call a democrat or an Ind or an NPA that doesn't vote at all.
Useless.

Her and the tea party are becoming obsolete. They had their moment in the sun but most people now view them as the joke they really are. Remember Alvin Brown refusing to answer their slanted questionairre? Nobody else does either.

Audrey Moran said it best in her concession speech. Partisan politics have no place at the local level.
Glad that so many freethinking people in Jacksonville decided to cross over.
To that end, I wonder:
If the election was
de facto as well as
de jure non-partisan, I wonder how differently the final votes cast would've turned out. I'll bet rather significantly.

I think, finally, people are becoming sick of over-hyped negativity and slander as a valid campaign platform.
Hogan went too negative on this one, and in so doing screwed himself.

Agree Chris, completely
