A Coast Guard helicopter conducting surveillance around the platform spotted a light rainbow sheen nearby Friday morning.

Would this still make it minor? And what is the cut of to minor from major as far as exploding production oil rigs go?

I've figured it out.  How about this. Any spark, fire, or subsequent explosion, large or small, on a production oil rig is major.  I have spoken.

It could have been something as minor as using steel chipping hammers on a steel structure! Ships have bronze equipment for just that reason! That rig pumped something like 1,400 barrels per day and with a 13 man crew, not what I would call a "Major Rig" but either way a real mickey mouse operation......and the crew was lucky! I did not see any lifeboat rigs on it either!

It all depends on personal agenda. Oil can leak if it doesnt hurt a certain group of peoples bottomline like the BP spill..BP was a big deal because sectors were losing money. Most American do not care for the environment only money. Money is more important than the environment to the average basic american who drives an SUV. So...its not major until groups of people are losing money.
