Jacksonville Scene Old Hollywood Party
[ May 15, 2010 ]

Jacksonville was once the original place for stars and starlets of the silver screen. In the early 1900's this was THE place where movies were made. Jacksonville Scene is bringing back the lights, glamor, and action!

We are reclaiming and celebrating the beginning of the big screen and bringing it home!

Wear black and white (dress to the ritz or casual, everyone is welcome). See real artifacts from the silent movies provided by Norman Studios, the Florida Theatre and the Jacksonville Historical Society!

Includes FREE Bud light, wine and drinks, music by rising star Ray Callender, and by Groove City DJs...and of course popcorn. May 15th at the Florida Theatre, you will be the star with a special red carpet entrance too!

After Party at Dos Gatos. Your ticket stub from the event will be good for a complimentary draft, glass of wine or well cocktail (their well is all good stuff too!).

Tickets are just $25 online/$35 at the door (If available) and benefits the Florida Theatre. Must be at least 21.

Make sure you visit the Norman Studios table at the event. The Norman Studios Silent Film Museum, Inc. is a nonprofit organization formed in 2007 to protect and preserve the history of silent film and to relate the African-American experience and the role of filmmaker Richard Norman in the early days of the movie industry. Norman was among the first to produce "race films," starring black actors in positive, nonstereotypical roles, helping to break the racial barrier that existed in mainstream filmmaking. At the time of Norman's career, Jacksonville was enjoying its time in the spotlight as the "Winter Film Capital of the World," home to more than 30 motion picture studios and a precursor to today's Hollywood. Top film stars of the day including Oliver Hardy and Clara Bow wintered and worked in Northeast Florida during what many call its "golden age." NSSFM's goal is to help restore the Norman property and reopenit as a silent film museum and training center for new generations of filmmakers. Planned activities will include school outreach and field trips, workshops and summer camps, plus an array of independent film screenings and other events inspired by the property's history as a silent film studio.

I wish I could be there.  I'm really happy to hear that the Norman restoration people are still active; I'd not heard any news from or on them in quite some time.
The tourist would realize at once that he had struck the Land of Flowers - the City Beautiful!
