You would be surprised to learn how much bulk materials come from other countries. I did a job in the panhandle where the aggregate (gravel) for the concrete came from Nova Scotia and Venezuela.

Absolutely the cheapest way to move bulk cargoes is by water.  There are gravel mines in the upper mid-west, but it is cheaper to ship it from Nova Scotia by water than by rail or truck from there.  That said it a bit hard to ship by water to Denver.

When I was a kid, you could smell those nasty paper mills all the way in Daytona Beach on a cold day. Wasn't exactly a great advertisement for Jacksonville, lemme tell you.
