It was 40 years ago today... we began our journey to the moon.  Check out this website...

In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

hah, great timing. My friend just sent me this link about ten mins ago, then I take a break to check MJ and bada bing, here it is.

The playback of the live audio is pretty quiet right now, i'm going to keep it on in the background until i hear something interesting pop up.

I remember watching the first man step on the moon.  My wife of only six years and I were glued to our tv.  I also remember Walter Cronkite getting rather annoyed when the astronauts on a later moon walk managed to aim a new color tv camera at the sun and wreck it.  I can't remember exactly what he said, but it really wasn't allowed on tv, especially 40 years ago.
I also remember the high hopes I had at the time that I might become a part of going into space.  Not as an astronaut but to live in or on a space habitat.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_habitat for more details.
At the time, I was sure we'd be on Mars or beyond in just a few years.  Science fiction (by authors like Heinlein, Asimov, Verne and those of similar vein) really isn't that far from reality.  Verne made some very accurate predictions in From the Earth to the Moon , so many years ago.
I don't understand why we haven't mounted an expedition to the stars.  There is a very old saying which suggests that putting all your eggs in the same basket might not be a good idea.  That’s where we stand now.  All humanity’s eggs are in one basket â€" the Earth.  We need to get away before something like Lucifer’s Hammer , Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven, actually happens to us.
Remember, Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 hit Jupiter.  Just think what one of those comet fragments would have done to us.  A major asteroid or comet strike may have taken out the dinosaurs and, according to http://www.space.com/news/051103_asteroid_apophis.html , “The potential for a newly discovered asteroid smacking into the Earth in 2036 cannot be discounted.”
Who knows, perhaps Arthur C. Clarke, writer of the short story Rescue Party , may turn out to be correct after all.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
