From the Library of Congress, below is the link to an 1876 birds eye map to correlate with the 1874 "skyline" picture.  The large building with the steeple was the Grand National Hotel.  It was between Cedar (now Pearl) and Julia Streets facing Bay Street, now occupied by the Bellsouth/ATT tower.   In front of it is a park, a narrow waterway, a wharf, and then a rail line running across the riverfront.  I noticed also that Main Street was called Pine Street at the time.

Here is the link where you can navigate and zoom in on this 1876 map:

Pictures of Jax in 1874!:

Hey!  Whatever happened to just plain ol' COMMON SENSE!!

QuoteThere has been a great deal of fraud and plundering on the part of county officers who, dazzled by the possession of newly acquired power, have not hesitated to put both hands into the public purse. Many have been detected, but some have been so adroit as to completely cloak their iniquities. A firm and thoroughly honest administration of State affairs would bring Florida into front rank among the prosperous States in a short time.

The more things change... the more they stay the same... :D
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."
