FiCoMo

After following along with some of the discussions here at MetJax about proposed projects and existing buildings in the area, we're thinking a few of you guys would like to get involved in a little modern movement we're trying to get going here in town.

In 2005 with the help of Live Modern’s chat room, we started First Coast Modern which later received the tag line FiCoMo.  We met every three to four months to talk about all things modern.  We had a really great turn out for the Jacksonville market, where it seems like modern is still a dirty word.  A few months ago we ran into some of the original attendees and they expressed that were interested in getting back together.  We decided to use Facebook as a conduit at that time, and we have a group page at http://www.facebook.com/friends/?ref=tn#/group.php?gid=25834270818

What to ask yourself to see if you should participate:

Am I interested in modern architecture and design?

Do I like to partake in adult beverages and talk about modern architecture and design?

Would I like to meet people who have and interest in modern architecture and design?

Do I know two of the following three people?  Charles Eames…Rem Koolhaas…Le Corbusier

Am I interested in modern furniture and lighting?

Do I feel like Jacksonville is a little slow when it comes to modern design?

We started the Facebook Group to give everyone interested a forum to congregate, and as a place to keep members updated on upcoming meetings and events.

You can also follow FiCoMo on Twitter if you have an account @ http://twitter.com/FiCoMo, this will essentially be a micro-blog with anything we that we feel needs to be shared.

We have numerous people that have offered locations to meet.  We also think that we should have some kind of agenda and/or speakers.  We believe that modern design goes hand in hand with green and sustainability.  This is where Facebook comes in.  FiCoMo members can post links, pictures, ideas, and just about anything else as it relates to modern design.  This is not a place to advertise or sell your goods and services, but we would be interested in presentations from companies as they relate to modern / green design. If you are interested, please sign up for a Facebook account (If you don't already have one) and sign up for the First Coast Modern (FiCoMo) Group.

Remember that this is not for industry professionals only.  We welcome anyone and everyone who has a love, an interest, or just a curiosity of what modern design is.

We will soon be scheduling a gathering to get everyone together so that we can talk about what you would like to get out of First Coast Modern.  We will discuss potential meeting locations as well as possible speakers and presenters.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post and we look forward to hearing from and seeing you.

We're going to have our initial meeting at nest-living in Five Points, on Friday March 6th at 6:30pm. Of course this date is also First Friday in Five Points, so you can make a night of it.

236 views and not one comment.  See, this is exactly why we're trying to get people together to discuss modern design and modern living here in Jacksonville, Florida.

There will be free beer and wine provided by Jason McDonald of Sesco Lighting at the meet and greet this Friday night at 6:30 at nestliving in Five Points.  Hopefully we'll see some Metro Jacksonville folks there....

PS We won't be talking about black leather and chrome.  ;)

Keep posting FiCoMo... :)  Sometimes things take time to gather momentum... :)
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Welcome FiCoMo, I am new to the forum as well and did not catch the Mid-Century Modern symposium at the beaches but thoroughly enjoyed the one last year in Riverside.   My appreciation of Modern architecture has grown in the last 5 years, but I just don't get to see much of it in Jax.  We have some nice examples, but they are few and far between.  I even work in real estate in the downtown neighborhoods and just don't get to enjoy very often.  I'm a Craftsman guy and have grown to appreciate the elegance of modern.  I always enjoy great craftsmanship regardless of the style.  There are a couple of interesting modern homes on the market right now.
