Just an old article I came across about Jax's failure to promote its golfing prominence on the national level.

Great find.  I've wondered why Jax isn't better known nationally as well.

We have plenty of amenities to market but chose not to.

Interesting quotes from the article...

QuoteThe city has several factors going against it. The first is, oddly, one of its strengths. It's in Florida, though barely.

QuoteThe marketing is under-funded and doesn't enjoy the unity Myrtle Beach has enjoyed. Jacksonville's marketing budget is a fraction of what Golf Holiday gets to work with.

And most telling...

QuoteAnother possible factor is the lethargy of city officials. Jacksonville basically lucked into an NFL team - I know, because I covered the whole expansion story as a sportswriter there. Jacksonville has never exactly been known as a "can-do" city
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Key quote:

All that being said, if Jacksonville would get off its duff and promote golf better, I'm betting it could become a major golf destination. Maybe it thinks getting an NFL team is enough, but it's missing out on a tremendous opportunity. Note to Jax Mayor John Peyton: Check the spending habits of NFL fans vs. traveling golfers.

Yep...I found the article intriguing because of the quotes you all have highlighted above.

It was also interesting to confirm that Myrtle Beach does actually have more golf courses than NE FL...I always wondered where we ranked in that category.
