A South Philadelphia man enraged because a father and son were talking during a Christmas showing of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button took care of the situation when he pulled a .380-caliber gun and shot the father, police said.

James Joseph Cialella Jr., 29, of the 1900 block of Hollywood Street is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons violations.

"It's truly frightening when you see something like this evolve into such violence," said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

Police were called to the Riverview Theatre in the 1400 block of Columbus Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. where the gunshot victim, a Philadelphia man who was not identified, told police a man sitting near him told his family to be quiet and threw popcorn at his son.

After exchanging words, Vanore said Cialella allegedly got out of his seat to confront the family when the father got up to protect them. That's when the victim was shot once in the left arm, sending others in the theatre running to safety.

Cialella then sat down to watch the movie. Police arrived a short time later and arrested Cialella and confiscated his weapon, Vanore said.

Pride...Dude should have shut his ass up when Cialella asked him to shut up. Never know whats on peoples minds nowadays. Challenging a stranger can put you in the dirt. Street smart will tell you if someone is brave enough to tell you to STFU 9 times out of ten they going through something and the issue shouldn't be escalated. Guess people have to learn the hard way.

It's called keeping it real.  Both were in the right if you ask me.

Both were wrong but the shooter is significantly more wrong and will rightfully go to prison for his deeds.

The movie theater was at fault for not having an usher available to silence the talkers.  This is a prime example of the breaking down of society.  Disregard for common courtesy, disregard of generally accepted rules.  The need to arm ones self against threats.  The misuse of arms to enforce minor rule breaking.

Variations of this type of encounter are happening more frequently all over.  Traffic laws and common courtesy.  Been out shopping lately??

Nice spin Troll putting the blame on the theater. Next you will be telling us the victim should start sueing big theater, etc.

It isnt spin... theaters used to provide ushers for exactly this sort of altercation.  They also helped people to their seats and resolved other isues encountered when you put 100 strangers together in a room.

Okay, here's my two cents....first of all, yes the theaters used to have ushers to not only help people find a seat, but they helped maintain order (ie: keeping others quiet) during the showing. Secondly, the father and son were rude and totally inconsiderate of others in the theater, if indeed they were talking throughout the movie. Thirdly, the guy was wrong to have thrown popcorn and then shooting the father.

What should've taken place, if the people won't be quiet, once asked...then talk to the manager, and it's their responsibility to deal with the rude patrons. If they failed to comply, then the manager should've asked them to leave.

I agree that things have changed greatly, people in general have become rude, inconsiderate and then all too often, use violence to resolve the issue.

I agree jbm... but leaving a seat to find a manager in the middle of a movie, then confronting the rude person during the movie, and actually expecting manager to do anything is... well... not likely to happen.

I know, which shows the lack of customer service....and I would've demanded a refund or pass to see the show at a different day/time

The theaters should start advertising a text number to report bad behavior by the audience like the NFL has. Easy, private and you don't have too get up and miss any of the movie.

They still have ushers, but ushers are usually kids that well, dont always have the best work ethic.  I like the text idea.

I cannot say I have seen an actual usher in a theater in ten years... but I think the text idea would be a great tool for theaters and patrons... :)
