Southeastern Grocers to be acquired by Aldi

Aldi announced this morning that they would acquire both the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket chains from Southeastern Grocers, in what appears to be an effective dismantling of the Jacksonville-based company. The German chain plans to convert some stores into Aldi locations and leave others in their current form. The acquisition is expected to close in early 2024.

Fresco y Más will be divested to an investment group, Fresco Retail Group LLC, which currently plans to continue operating that chain's 28 stores and 4 pharmacies.

The Harveys in Moncrief will be the first local store to be converted into an Aldi:

Four months after completing the purchase of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, Aldi is converting its first Northeast Florida store to its namesake brand.

The city is reviewing building plans to convert the Harveys at 2261 Edgewood Ave. W. in Northeast Jacksonville into a 21,839-square-foot grocery Aldi store at an estimated project cost of $1.7 million.

Harveys operated in a 46,189-square-foot space. Aldi stores are smaller than the Harveys and Winn-Dixie supermarkets.

I would personally love to see the DT Harvey's converted into an Aldi. Their prices are great and it beats driving down to Philips & Emerson

Looks like my wish is coming true

Downtown Jacksonville's Harveys Supermarket is now one of at least nine potential Aldi conversions of former Southeastern Grocers stores in Northeast Florida.

As for Downtown, the city of Jacksonville is reviewing a permit application to turn part of the Harveys at 777 N. Market St. into the smaller, streamlined format of Germany-based Aldi.

A Southeastern Grocers spokesperson said May 14 the store would close in late June for the conversion and employees have been notified.

The $810,000 conversion will reduce the store's size to 25,000 square feet. This will leave nearly 6,500 square feet for another tenant.
