Jacksonville is on the cusp of becoming a minority-majority city

Interesting article. I don't think I've heard much conversation about a future Jacksonville with different demographics and how the things we're planning for today factor into such a situation.

QuoteOut of the country's 15 largest cities, only two were majority white in 2017: Columbus, Ohio, and Jacksonville. But that's about to change.

Jacksonville is in the midst of a demographic shift as white residents leave and the non-white population flourishes.

In 2008, only 42 percent of the city was non-white. Nine years later, in 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey found that 49 percent was. 2018′s data won't come out until next year, but it's possible that Jacksonville has already crossed the threshold thanks to the city's growing black, Hispanic and Asian populations.

There were 15,400 fewer white people in 2017 compared to 2008, 32,400 more African-Americans, 36,100 more Latinos and 18,600 more Asians. In the county as a whole, which includes the Beaches and Baldwin, there were about 6,300 fewer white people and 93,000 more non-white people. The county was still about 53 percent non-Hispanic white.

Krista Paulsen, an urban sociologist at the University of North Florida, said that when cities see minority populations grow, their needs change.

For example, how public space is used can vary by racial group, she said. Conflict has arisen in cities when white residents have responded with hostility to minority groups who might be more community-minded than previous residents.

Growing minority populations, she said, might be more likely to need a more robust public transportation system, more public parks and schools that are equipped to teach students who are learning English as a second language. Because changing demographics isn't always obvious, sometimes needs go unmet.

This stuck out to me: "One-third of Jacksonville's cumulative growth from 2010 to 2017 was thanks to international migration"

That sounds incredibly high.

Agreed, but seems to gel with the census numbers.

Roughly ~160,000 net population growth since 2010.

~43k net new locals (130k births, 87k deaths)

~65k new migrants.

~52k new immigrants.

Works out to roughly 6,000-7,000 international immigrants to Jax per year since 2010.

When you look at the overall immigration numbers (+22.45 million new immigrants in the United States since 2010), Jacksonville only accounts for about 0.23% of total immigration growth (1 out of every 500 immmigrants end up here).

Sounds about right.

Not to me. Everytime I go to Costco at the SJTC I feel like a majority of the shoppers there speak to their companion(s) in something other than english.

The American melting pot keeps on simmering.  Went to the Gillum event at 1904 music hall last night and the different minority groups are very engaged with this community.   Drinks afterward on top of Cowford Chop House felt like Jax is growing up.

Some days I feel like further diversity is the only thing that will save Jax from shooting itself in the foot long term. Ultimately, at the end of the day, an engaged community and the market will drive what this city becomes in the future, not necessarily the perspectives and directions taken towards certain initiatives at city hall.

I really found this article to be surprising! I personally love the fact that Jacksonville is becoming more diverse!

The best thing about 'muh diversity' is the foods from all over the world. Jax is fine now political-wise (even if it leans slightly to the left or so), but hopefully we won't go insano-land leftward anytime soon. One minute you are in a laid back city, the next you become Portland or Seattle with Antifa ruling the city, and beating on people in the streets.

Jacksonville has been the murder capital of Florida for years (though I believe it dropped to second last year). So...

^^^Yup, that's true. Overwhelming because of idiot A and idiot B (multiplied in the hundreds into the future) wanna kill each other mostly on one side of town. I don't care how insensitive I sound, if it was a bunch bikers killing each other off people would have no sympathy.

I hate it when the local media wanna blame the sheriff (Mike Williams) for morons killing each other off, and don't put the blame where it truly belong. The police job is not the predict crimes before they happen, they come in after the fact. The problem is irresponsible 'mothers' and no fathers in the home mainly, but the left seemingly hates traditional families for whatever dumb reason...

When people do stupid stuff (like driving without a seatbelt and get into an accident, playing the Wild Wild West etc) I get desensitized. It's the innocent caught up in the heinous BS that I have sympathy for, not career perpetrators.

I don't see any deleted post from you in the logs. May not have saved.
