Norwegian Death Metal...at a piercing volume.

Swedish death metal is much more deathier... :)
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Something mellow and sophisticated. I think jazz would be ideal. Classical would be good too. Personally, I hate the idea of news or talk radio in a coffee shop. Genuinely dislike it. The same way I dislike it when I go to a restaurant and they have the TVs tuned to FOX News or CNN. I like how someone earlier in the thread refered to a coffee shop as an "oasis." I think that's a pretty good description of what a coffee shop should feel like. A place where you can relax, clear your mind, and watch the world go by without having the speakers pumping your brain full of information that you are probably going to the coffee shop to escape from. Nothing is the antithesis of what a cafe experience should be like more than an NPR coorespondent or a radio shock jock drolling on about Sarah Palin or Barrack Obama or the collapsing economy or War in Iraq.

QuoteLoL.  'Suicide is painless.'  Ock's worst nightmare would be to walk into a coffee shop and have the M*A*S*H theme song playing ad infinitum.

But Doc K, being maybe the only other JAZZ FAN on this board, you've got to know I love the original piece!
NICE CATCH. I bat 100's out there, but few have ever been snagged. I think you got one here and someone else pulled out DOC HOLIDAY! LOL! (You did know he was a local boy didn't you?)

I love New Age as well but it must tell a story or go somewhere... Abercrombies TIMELESS or anything by OREGON are the key bridge sounds.

While I'm not necessarily a jazz 'aficionado', I've been known to migrate to the jazz channels on my XM.  I think I can agree on the Oregon part.

To KenFSU's point - it's amazing what some 'lighter' classical can do for the mind and well-being.  Jazz isn't for everyone, and neither is classical.  But I find, to the average joe, Classical is a little less polarizing than just about any sub-genre of Jazz.  New Age, depending on the artist, might be a good compromise.

At least have a TV with ESPN and the sound off with captions... :)
