I don't think East Jacksonville ever incorporated as a city. Fairfield did for a little while before it was annexed.

But yeah, as odd as it seems to people who don't know the Eastside, it's the area between Downtown and Springfield and the river, not east of the river. And I don't know of any "pre Eastern Pre- Consolidation towns" besides the Beaches, which are miles from the Old City.

True. My mistake. East Jacksonville's attempt to incorporate in 1878 was defeated. Neighboring Fairfield's attempt was successful in 1880. When they were annexed by Jax in 1887, their populations were:

East Jacksonville - 1,939

Fairfield - 543

Oakland - 400

Also, back in those days, Campbell Hill, Mixontown, parts of what we call Brooklyn today, etc. used to be known as the Westside. That's where Springfield's Westside Church of Christ gets its name from. My parents used to attend it back in the late 1960s when it was located right off Mrytle Avenue, just north of McCoys Creek.

^Yeah, Northside, Westside and Southside have expanded their borders well past the original use. Eastside actually did as well. The original East Jacksonville development was small, but now the "Eastside" includes everything up to at least 8th Street. In fact, some consider Phoenix Park and Glen Myra to be "Eastside" neighborhoods, going as far up as 20th Street at least. But it didn't spread as far as the others due to the river and the fact that Arlington was already well populated (and the name had a lot more cachet at the time, as it was a residential hot spot).

Eastside is one of my favorite parts of town. It has a lot of potential for redevelopment. Hopefully as momentum continues in Downtown and Springfield, it will catch on in Eastside too. I suspect that once things start going there, it will come together faster than either of those cases.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

I quite like Durkeeville, too.
