Karen Mathis reports in the Daily Record that Performance Bicycle is coming to open stores in Jacksonville.

Performance Bicycle, based in Chapel Hill, N.C., plans to open this summer in Deerwood Park in Jacksonville's Southside in the site of the David Gates Golf Headquarters Inc. store.
A building permit application shows Performance Bicycle will open in the 10,260-square-foot building at 4421 Southside Blvd., whose owner is shown as the David D. Gates Land Trust of Ponte Vedra Beach. The building was constructed in 1998.

The construction project for Performance Bicycle is shown at $280,000 and is out for bid.

I would get excited, but if Councilman Clark has his way, there won't be anywhere to ride them!!

Lol, you're seriously the first person I've ever heard say that. It's usually a tossup between who's snobbiest, them or City Cycle. It's a tough choice. ;)

I'll stick with the Lakeside Park Schwinn cyclery just south of San Juan on Blanding. for anything and everything for me my wife and kids, and their cousins too_ The Fetzers are awesomely generous when it comes to sponsoring the local neighborhood events, upbeat and truly hilarious folks!
Call me old fashioned or stuck in my ways- just don't call me clannish or nepotistic

sorry more typos

its not even close....but of course you do seem to be one that is hard to please....if the Avondale store folks don't satisfy, try the San Marco store on Hendricks

I haven't been to the San Marco store in a while, but the Avondale store guys are absolutely the worst.  I refuse to go there even if it's an emergency.  On 3 or 4 straight visits I had horrible service and they were extremely arrogant.  I kept thinking that I might have caught them on a bad day, but now I don't think these guys ever have good days.

A lot depends on whose bikes you want to buy. City Cycle sells Cannondales, and I think that is it. Open Road sells Specialized, Scott, and Wilier. Performance sells GT, Fuji, Schwinn, Scattante, Diamondback. Department stores and Dicks or Sports Authority have a couple brands, though I don't know which, and they are generally the lower end bikes of those brands (not that there's anything wrong with that - I got a cheapy Diamondback MTB that has an awesome frame. Now that it has upgraded components, its great). I'm not sure where you get Treks in this town (well, I checked, and there is a Trek store at the beach and in Mandarin).

I imagine most people just go to the bike store closest to them for components etc, unless they are really getting hosed. For purchasing a bike, you might travel just to get the bike you want. But unless you are a pro, you can pretty much find the bike you want within any brand. If you want an American-built bike, try to find an American-built time machine (I know, there are some small companies that you can buy from).

Lakeshore schwinn used to have Litespeeds I think, which are amazing.  If you can turn an allen wrench you can always buy your bike online.

Overstreet

I used to use Performance Bicycle cataloge for clothing, gloves and accessories.  I now find REI has more deals on clothing and easier to use.  My local shop is good for the bike but "oversized load" clothing selection is a little hard to find.  I'm not going to get excited about it.

No, actually not hard to please at all. And I've dealt with all of them personally, bought several high end bikes/accessories, etc, so I don't need to check them out, I know. And so does most others in the biking community. The two businesses I mentioned are indeed the known uppity pricks of the local biking game. At least in the surrounding core area. If you want stories I'll tell them, but it's probably best if I just stop there.

Lakeshore & Zencog are the only ones I deal with. Both are great in their own way. Lakeshore even came & picked up my stranded friend once & took him/his bike back to their shop. And they'll both deal with you even if you didn't drop a grand on one of their own bikes without looking down their noses at you. After I heard my friend's story, my next purchase was a $600 Dahon folding bike from the guys at Lakeshore & they've been great. 8)

all I can say is Open Road in San Marco has provided me great service for over 6 years....for the past 4 years I had a Diamondback mountain bike purchased at Sports Authority....and before that, I had a lower-end bike (purchased at K-Mart or Target if I remember correctly)....they never once were snobby or talked down to me as someone with a "joke of a bike".

I'm still holding down a Diamondback that I got from NAS Jax's Naval Exchange about a year ago. I'm definitely not too picky, or snobbish besides removing that awful hard-ass factory seat, and replacing it with a comfortable Bell memory foam seat.

Dead on! It seems like unless your walking in covered in spandex with you shoes clicking away the tend to ignore you.

After dealing with all of the local shops and trying to keep my business local, I actually tend to buy stuff online due to the attitudes at a lot of the shops. If I'm in Riverside and need something simple like a chain or tube, I'll usually go to Zen Cog. If I'm towards the beach I'll go the "Bike Shop", Freddy is pretty awesome and I had really good customer service there.
