"This morning, we spent several hours at the library. It was all but deserted, but when we went to the restroom, it was full of vagrants ; washing up, changing clothes, etc. We left and went to Starbucks at the Landing and, guess what! Same thing, only there weren't even any empty places to sit for paying customers."

sounds like downtown jax is THE PLACE TO BE on the weekends!  this was posted a couple of weeks ago on a travel blog.

These groups who pander to the homeless downtown do so to keep them there.  If there were homeless in their neighborhood, sleeping on their park benches, urinating in their yard, throwing trash in their street I seriously doubt they'd be so "compassionate".  So by coming downtown and handing out freebies they attract the homeless here.  The city by ignoring the problem contributes to the number of vagrants and homeless downtown.  Until I see this city get serious about this problem, I'm afraid downtown will remain a lump of coal.
