Uptown Jacksonville & Midtown Jacksonville

I was wondering. I'm NOT exactly sure how zoning works, but Jacksonville still has a lot of unused land. How come Jax doesn't have an Uptown or Midtown. What is the exact definition of Uptown and Midtown? Are they the same as a Downtown. What determines the name??

IMO, Jacksonville's version of Midtown to me is Brooklyn, and Uptown is Riverside. That's just me, and its the biggest load of crap in town for Pulte to name a townhome development Midtowne right off JTB and Salisbury Rd.

'Up' is north, so Springfield would be uptown.

In Charlotte, they call downtown uptown, because downtown sits on a hill, above the rest of the city, making it uptown.

If you define it based on the compass, then Springfield would be uptown, and Riverside would be downtown, and downtown would be midtown.  Southbank would be easttown, since it sits east of midtown (downtown) .

I like the "Midtown Sports District" as an area name. Rebranding phillips hwy extending from St Nicholas and San Marco to say university as Midtown would be good also.

until it became a ghetto, springfield was always referred to as uptown.

Our city didnt really grow naturally enough to develop a mid town, so we only had downtown.

Ahhh  ok. So basically its based on North,south,east,west location. If buildings such as the Modis and the BOA Tower were in Springfield would that make it more of an Uptown? Or is that a zoning issue?

I don't think anything is ever zoned Uptown or Midtown... they are just nicknames.

I bet we could get the area from the Midtown office park on beach near St. Nicholas to Phillips hwy and out to emerson branded midtown.  Would that area be spring park?

When I was a kid people often referred to Lavilla as uptown.  Not to long ago they labeled the sports district as midtown.  I agree with Lunican, I think it's just nicknames.

i would agree with the idea that midtown is emerson, philips, univ areas...the Midtown Centre at Emerson & 95 has been named so since at least 2000 when I worked at CB Richard Ellis and we were marketing it.

"Uptown" and "Midtown" are just nicknames like SoDo (South of Dowtown) or SoHo (South of Houston Street).  There's really nothing special to them.

If we went by these definitions, Springfield would be a "Midtown" and Brentwood would be "Uptown".  Going by topography, Arlington would be "Uptown" and East Jacksonville/Tallyrand would be "Midtown".
