Downtown dilemma: ‘It looks like hell down here’

Follow this company said Monday that 10 Laura Street properties will receive grants totaling $100,000.

Those grants will be matched by property owner investment to bring the total value of the project to $211,000.

All of the properties are between Monroe Street and Independent Drive.

The following properties will receive grants for improvements, including awnings, banners, murals, pedestrian signage, landscaping, exterior lighting and sidewalk café furniture:

The Jacksonville Landing, 2 Independent Drive
Riverwatch Tower, 76 S. Laura St.
Life of the South Building, 100 W. Bay St.
Wells Fargo Center, 1 Independent Drive
The Jacksonville Bank Building, 100 N. Laura St.
Elks Building, 201 N. Laura St.
Chamblin’s Uptown, 215 N. Laura St.
Gus and Co. Shoe Repair, 225 N. Laura St.
Magnificat Café, 231 N. Laura St.
Greenleaf Building, 206 N. Laura St.
“As the organization that is focused on bringing Downtown to life through a variety of programs, we’re excited about these additional improvements to Laura St. and believe this grant program will serve as a model that can be replicated on other streets,” DVI Executive Director Terry Lorince said.

The selection of Laura Street as the initial façade improvement program was based on the city’s recent streetscape improvements.

Good. How much of this is going to the landing?
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

I'm really excited about this. Laura St is going to feel much more alive after these improvements.

Same here. And the Landing already indicate that they will be using part of money for outdoor cafe seating. DT is turning around little by little and no some seems to relaize it.

Sounds great. Laura Street is really coming along.

QuoteThe Life of the South Building at Laura Street and West Bay Street is another grant recipient. Managing General Partner Quinn Bell said the funds will be used to transform the exterior of the structure, which was more than 40 years ago the headquarters of Stockton, Whatley, Davin & Co.

Changes being designed include banners, awnings and hanging flower baskets on the Laura Street side of the building. Up lighting will be installed to improve the nighttime appearance.

“We have an old building and we’re going to make it look like a new building,” said Bell.

Not to be so negative, but does this involve a nice coating of a 'Jacksonville Beige' stucco?

A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Hopefully this will make the buildings that didn't apply wish they had and take it on themselves to do something about their lighting or seating too. You know, kind if the like the one or two houses on the block that have no Christmas lights on them, but everyone else does.
