Great write-up!   One note - the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing arts, as described and linked, is not the building pictured.  That performing arts center just broke ground this spring and is going in across from City Hall on South and Orange.  It is confusing because they have such similar names.

Kicking our ass.

kicking our ass is right.  Both Tampa and Orlando are doing so much, while we sit in the dust.

having lived in Tampa, there really isn't that much difference between us and them.

I think Orlando is ahead of both Jacksonville and Tampa when it comes to recent decisions in creating a future urban community.  They already have a vibrant downtown that's well connected with surrounding neighborhoods and now will be adding rail into the mix.  However, both Tampa and Jacksonville have the historic urban bones that Orlando lacks.  If either can get its act together, they'll have a component of urban living that Orlando can't instantly recreate.

+1 about Orlando's progress. I didn't believe it until I saw it myself. Just shows that it can be done and the effort can be worthwhile.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Having lived in Jacksonville and now living in Tampa, I would say that we are leaps and bounds ahead of Jax and leaps and bounds behind Orlando. It amazes me how much more they seem to get done in Orlando on these types of projects than gets done in the Tampa Bay Area.

I was hoping that Orlando was going to extend Lymmo (the free downtown bus circulator) on the North/South axis, which would have serviced Ivanhoe/Florida Hospital and College Park.  This would have instantly connected Ivanhoe/Uptown with downtown without any need for a car.  Here is the proposal:

This is still a part of the long range plan, however Orlando announced last week that it will build out its East/West link first (conecting downtown with Parramore and Thornton Park), with Fed grant dollars:  http://www.lymmostudy.com/maps/EW-LPA.pdf

Anyone else lived in Florida long enough to remember when the Phillips performance hall was an abandoned powerplant? Sure looks snazzier without the smokestacks on top. How is our redevelopment of the Southside Generating Station going?
