Majority Of U.S. Babies Are Non-White For First Time

Currently, non-Hispanic whites make up just under half of all children 3 years old, which is the youngest age group shown in the Census Bureau's October 2009 annual survey, its most recent. In 1990, more than 60 percent of children in that age group were white.

William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who analyzed the data, said figures in the 2009 survey can sometimes be inexact compared with the 2010 census, which queries the entire nation. But he said when factoring in the 2010 data released so far, minorities outnumber whites among babies under age 2.

Interesting. I'd like to see how those numbers look here in Florida.

It's all a matter of who they call "white" though. These figures are only for non-Hispanic whites. Including Hispanic whites (ie, the majority of Hispanics) would make white babies still in the majority compared to the racial minorities. Additionally, it doesn't make any mention of multi-racial individuals.

I know there a study recently done and stated that in Jacksonville, that the minorities will eventually out number whites because minorities are the ones having all the children. I forgot the projected time frame they stated however. If I can find the article I will post it. Being a minority myself, I can see this trend being true. A vast majority of minorities, in the midst of a recession, continue to have children. Where as white America look at is as, " Hey times are hard, and we can not afford to have any children." Most minorities are used to struggling anyways, so to have give kids back to back in this economy is no big deal to them. Thats just my take on it.

During the Great Depression of 1930's, my grandmother was part of 12 children family (She's the 10th child). They were living on the farm. I think you get the rest of the picture.

My point is, if you include white Hispanics, who are the majority of all Hispanics, whites would still make up a very easy majority. "Hispanic" isn't a race, it's an ethnicity. Hispanics can be of any race. Of course, the racial categories are arbitrary and unscientific, but ethnicity is even more muteable.

I done did experience this 'trend' first hand ahead of the 'curve' some time ago in my Native North Murami.Too boot; is not a good idea to hang in the once idyllic neighborhood of my youth.the parking cars all over the front yards,the general malaise,trash,window bars,busted fences,vegetation stripped but a clue to demographic shift.But who says the Pioneer generation would rightfully reign??,Sunkist Pool renamed in honor of a white politician Pud (my Dad'sNemesis!) full of white kids who would soon embrace a wave of "diversity" that would scrape the neighborhood clean of diversity,in favor of a new minority majority.Guess the greatest generation ("" "") was of short term.
