I dont see how anyone can screw up a Cinco de Mayo party. All you need is plenty of beer and tequilla and by the end of the night everyone will be having a good time.

The people who own the Cinco de Mayo at the Landing are the same owners of La Nop.

They should just call it La Nop then, so I don't have to remember so many Spanish words.

La Nop has been around for over a decade.  The Hendricks location is the first.  The food isn't gourmet by any means, but it's tasty and I've been eating it for years.  Two brothers (I believe) out of the family who owns La Nop wanted to go slightly more upscale, so they opened Cinco de Mayo.

Saying "upscale" and "The Landing" just doesn't taste right coming out of my mouth. But you did say "slightly" so that's fair.

If you've ever been to the La Nop on Hendricks - I get the feeling serving Mexican food out the back of a pickup truck would be "slightly more upscale."

Great food, though!

The one on Hendricks is a serious dump. I refuse to go there. Now the one at the Landing, that is high class!

That is part of the charm!  Any of the newer ones are more upscale.  We call the one on Philips at Baymeadows the "fancy" one.

I agree with Danno. I've been going to the Hendricks location since it only had the 1 dining room (in '02 or so).  The ceiling tiles were falling down, the floor was nasty gray carpet, and the walls had water spots, but the food was excellent.  What is there now is 30 times nicer than what was there previously, but the taste of the food has remained the same.  It's comfort food for me, so I'll be there until I die or they go out of business.  Eating at any of the newer ones just doesn't feel right to me.

My ONLY complaint with La Nop is that their guac comes out of a giant bucket.  There's no way that stuff is fresh.  And yet, I still order it most times I'm there.  Also, the tamales aren't great.

No respectable mexican eatery should have sub-standard tamales.

That is one of the true items that should be outstanding.

As a matter of fact, if I ever opened up a mexican restaurant, one of the positions to fill would be masa grinder.  Requirements:  At least 60 years old, not able to speak english and had to do it as a child back home.

My wife and I have a few tamale sources.  Top secret of course...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

As do I, sir.   ;)

While we're on the subject, mexican food that is, whatever happened to the Chevy's / Rio Bravo chain?  "No cans in our kitchens!"  -  Every time I went there the food was awesome.  Even more spectacular was that they did provide fresh everything - as a national chain.  I was really sad when they packed up and moved away.
