Not to argue the point but I have found many references to Wacca Pilatka on several historical sites including the Jax Historical Socierty and the City of Jacksonvilles own website. Are you saying they are all wrong?

Then I learned something new about my city today. Thanks Stephen for clearing that up.  ;D

maybe it was just a "nickname"? but nothing official, kind of like Chicago "Windy City"

Anyhow, i was happy the way Mike Hogan handled his general election victory. While i was shocked with the abortion clinic reference, i dont see him as a religious zealot, like say Don Redman. He aknowledged Browns victory and said while both wanted to acheive the same for the city, they just had completely different ways of doing so.
Mike Hogans victory should not be perceived as a disaster. I will reach out and see how he would move forward with our city. As time passes, i dont see Hogan putting a giant cross on City Hall.
While many here would disagree, lets just stay (very) tuned to the mayoral campaign.

I saw the opposite. He came off as a smug dick-hole during his victory speech all braggadocios about his margin of victory.
And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

Looking forward to alvins story.

Spent the weekend at the Equestrian Center, with Normandy, Wilson, Firestone all filled with Hogan signs on commerical and private properties. They were everywhere, big ones on wooden 4X4s. Saw one Alvin sign, a little one with Hogan's throwing a shadow over it. The Westside obviously belongs to Hogan...

The Westside has seen some substantial demographic shifts over the years that will have more and more influence on election results. I'm never completely sure of the Westside's northern boundaries, so I'll just post some statistics of the area south of I-10:

The middle 80% (by population) of this region -- from Cecil Commerce Center Pkwy to Roosevelt/the Ortega River -- includes 156,000 people at just barely 51% non-hispanic white. Within this area are neighborhoods with some of the largest minority percentages outside of the Northside.

Add in the other 20% of the entire south-of-I-10 area -- including the considerably whiter neighborhoods of Venetia, Ortega, Fairfax, Avondale, Riverside, and the more rural area west of the CCC Pkwy - and we have a total of 196,000 people with still only a 56% non-hispanic white population. That still comes in just below Duval county's average of 57%.

This aint our parents' Westside, Hogan signs or not. If anything, the area described could be more of a bellwether for the city at large.

While I appreciate and commend your steadfast commitment to Hogans Creek Noone, it is disappointing that it (along with the pier) seem to be the only issues that matter to you in the Mayoral election.

tufsu1- Access to our St. Johns River our American Heritage for the people of Jacksonville is not the only issue in the mayoral election that I'm concerned about. Its number one in my book right now and in my opinion if our current mayor and my city councilman Don Redman and the Dist. 7 city councilman don't step up to the plate right now and continue to make excuses we will be a joke in the state of Florida.

tufsu1 I just want everybody that reads this post to know that you were at one or even more of the Hogans Creek cleanups and brought and paid for a number of supplies that were used in the cleanups. The bags that aren't blue were probably form tufsu1. Thank you.

Also you deserve the credit for identifying that the pier is in Dist.4. Huge pats on the back.

As for the other issues that concern me how about 2005-1007
Pension reform
Pension sustainability

Another today at Rules 2011-167 that is one bill and there are  3 bills with ethics that were a result of the Charter Revision Commission. Richard Clark wants to review because of the election race that he was just involved in.

Look. Be focused. If you think we are getting more access to the river we will be getting less. Shipyards III. And it has nothing to do with Hogan or Brown in my opinion.

tufsu1 you are one talented guy. I'll treat you to Robert's Eatery and you can treat me to the urban transition area that is in Riverside that Charles McBurney and the legislature designated as a special drinking zone. I wish we had that in Dist.4.

Bottom line. I'll just accept access and economic opportunity for everyone to our St. Johns River our American Heritage River. A Federal project.

Every cause needs a visible advocate.

I like his approach. The powers that be know him and his crusade, and he remains persistent despite the fact that they do.

KEEP IT UP NOONEY!

Buckethead, Thanks for the props. Have you ever been to a Waterways meeting? Love to take you and we'll do our own Show and Tell on Hogans Creek and then I'll treat you at Robert's.

With Hogan's stated lack of enthusiasm for downtown redevelopment I don't understand how anyone could think he would support redevelopment of Hogan's Creek or the Pier.  Much more likely that Alvin Brown would do so.

Maybe he likes the name of the creek!  ::)

It might be nice to see more of a side by side comparison of where they stand on specific city issues. Again with Hogan it seems like it's about conservative ideology points, not items that have to do with running a city. What is Hogan going to do besides just cut everything?

mtraininjax

QuoteThis stands to be a really good election because, among other reasons, the choices are so clear cut.

Yes, its obvious, its all Hogan.

Listen to reason. No one in the suburbs cares about downtown, and from the numbers of residents downtown, maybe 2,000 total, there are not enough voters in the downtown area or even springfield to make a difference.

If Brown is wiser than the zealots on this board, he will shut-up about downtown. People in Mandarin could care less about downtown. People who go to the Apple store at St. Johns Town Center could care less about downtown and a store there, why? Because every thing they need or want, aside from the beach, is right there in a short amount of space.

Downtown is dead until the next economic revival creates cheap money for developers to expand and add more residences. Until there is more housing downtown, you won't see more shops and more business look to stay there.

So Mr. Brown, speak until you run out of air about downtown, and Hogan will win in a landslide. No one cares outside of urban folks about downtown.
And, that $115 will save Jacksonville from financial ruin. - Mayor John Peyton

"This is a game-changer. This is what I mean when I say taking Jacksonville to the next level."
-Mayor Alvin Brown on new video boards at Everbank Field
