Classic Westside Jacksonville story, from the Times Union.

QuoteA 31-year-old Jacksonville man was arrested early Monday after police followed a debris trail and found him driving a front loader carrying a stolen ATM.

According to a police report, officers responding to a burglar alarm about 3:50 a.m. at 8299 W. Beaver St. found a Vystar Credit Union ATM missing, and the entire structure of the building demolished. They followed the debris left along the roadway and came upon a Caterpillar front loader turning off Bulls Bay Highway and on to a bike trail.

Officer Michael Peterson activated his lights, but the Caterpillar continued to travel about 50 feet, then went into reverse and headed straight for the patrol car, according to the report. The front loader was within five feet when Peterson threw his own car into reverse and evaded the heavy machinery. The Caterpillar switched gears and went forward again, but turned off after about 500 feet, police said.

Officers arrested Robert Gregory Anderson, who was driving the front loader. The ATM was inside the front end loader and severely damaged, although the money cartridge was not breached, police said.

Anderson was charged with burglary in excess of $1,000 and aggravated assault.
