Vote Democrat for mayor and city council. I don't trust democrats at the federal level, but I believe in them locally.

Anything's better than what we have now.

and I generally am not fond of Republicans at the state or national level...but generally, local govt. officials are more non-partisan....as maybe one day our local races will be!

How about the fact that this city has supported the growth and overgrowth of one church downtown who has by it's actions denied a very close friend safety in the church parking lot. The city refused to investigate. The church said he asked for it. There are plenty of reasons why the conservative ideas have kept us back. Status quote is the thing they love. Talk about change and they get their panties in a wad. I worked at the river club for years and some of the conversations i herd and it was just nuts some of the craziness that some of the leaders come up with. The money makes them crazy and the church tells them it's a good thing..lol...

i know several banks in the area get huge breaks on all kinds of stuff. How about charging the NFL a fee just for being here. Lets say 10 million a year...that's just a tip for many of the players..how about the fact that our school board sits on some of the most expensive properly in the city...they should be in a strip mall somewhere. The idea that the city would pay for some company to mow grass is ridiculous with the amount of youth in trouble today. I see kids going to jail and they are out the next day doing the same thing and nothing for them to do. I"m also a supporter of the idea that when a child goes to a public school the parents either do work at each child's school for at least 10 hrs a month. If not they get fined. Why does this city not have a national maritime school here...we have such a beautiful river and it's just ignored...a few tall ships downtown at all times would be beautiful and brings some positive attention to this city..there are lots of ideas out here...some crazy some not...but unless we put it out here...we are doomed to sit and let others determin our history.

indentured servitude is illegal I believe

Not here in ol Dixie!

My hat's off to the Metro Jax team for another inspiring article.  It's hard for the layman like me to judge these suggestions but they do seem compelling.  The hope lies in electing a new Mayor who will consider these ideas.

Vote Democrat for mayor and city council!

Nothing good will happen until we vote out the country bumpkins that are destroying Downtown!

Why was this separated from the old thread?  I really don't like how some of the moderators keep monkeying with threads and quotes.  At least erase my post so it doesn't sound like it has no context.

Edit: And why only include 3 of Urbaknight's posts and my 1 post?  There were lengthy "off topic political" posts by Stephen Dare and others, but I guess those are fine to leave in the original topic?  At least bring them all over!

Well correct me if I am wrong.......someone........but I believe that the past 16 years have been nothing but a Republican controled quagmire! I look at just what has taken place over that period of time and am not turning handsprings of job to say the least. I look at just where we, as a City, are at right this very time and say WTF! There has not been alot of vision or much of a plan of really anything! Sure, we got lots more concrete, we paid for it, we have lots more wheeling and dealing that have come out into the light, courtesy of the FBI, but overall it has been "Business as Usual" for the majority of the movers and shakers. Until the people take back their government and their City, we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.........everytime the City comes to a cross roads of sorts, invariably the wrong path is selected. The coming elections will be the most critical in the City's history and we need to choose wisely!

City politics aren't so much Repub/Democrat.  Maybe it is an anomaly that in Jacksonville you run on a party ticket, but I know that in Atlanta you don't run on a party ticket.  You can infer what party someone is, but there is no real way of telling.  I voted for Lisa Borders, who I wasn't sure what her political stance was.  I could guess that because she was black and a woman that she votes democrat, but on the other hand she is a Buckhead gal, went to Westminster and then on to I think an Ivy League (usually liberal but not if you're a rich southern student lol), and then made her way to the top of Cousins Properties.  I couldn't honestly tell if she was Repub or Democrat, and same went for Mary Norwood.  Kasim Reed was a little more obviously Democrat and he won, but no party politics came into play from any of the candidates.

I think this mayoral election looks very different from past races.  I don't think Jim Bailey or Audrey Moran are overtly Republican.  I think it's fair to say that a "republican" will win the race, but I don't think party politics is even appropriate for local races/local politics.  I don't even think that Mayor Peyton has acted like a Republican in the sense of having a Michelle Bachman or a Jim Demint as mayor.  He isn't very active in social politics (unlike some in our city council, a direct reflection of their constituents), and while he definitely wasn't very visionary or bold with downtown or a plan for our city, he did bring quite a bit of business to town.  He has also handled budget problems/constraints probably better than any of the other mayors in FL, and certainly better than the mayors in CA :p
