SCAD to present redevelopment ideas for the Shipyards

An email recently forwarded to Metro Jacksonville.

A graduate level Architecture Urban Design Studio from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), under the direction of Professor Arpad Daniel Ronaszegi, extends this invitation for you to view and discuss their ideas for redevelopment of the shipyards area.

This is the culmination of a semester of work by six teams of two (twelve students), with each team proposing a distinct solution. The preliminary reviews in Savannah last month promise interesting, stimulating and worthwhile presentations.

They will offer a gallery style exhibit of their work in Jacksonville, Florida on November 17 from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Lynnwood Roberts room in City Hall 117 West Duval Street. There will be a brief introduction to the project at 3:00 p.m.

Boards and models can be viewed during the holidays at the Ed Ball Building. Please drop by and discuss their plans with them this Wednesday afternoon.

most studio design projects don't....which has nothing to do with our leaders

The more design ideas our leaders see, the more likely they are to incorporate infrastructure elements that compliment a good urban design.  They don't need to develop the property as a whole, just aid the private sector in doing it right, peice by peice.

lake.........I'm with you! I have heard from several people who have knowledge about this and they were impressed also! I don't look for the current administration to do much of anything, other than take care of their buddies! We, the people, will have to wait till the next Administration is voted in............unless the current administration takes it upon themselves to do a deal under the table for one of their good buddies! I would not put it pass them to try something like that...............hope I am wrong!

I'll post my detailed thoughts in the morning when Lake posts the article... but I was shocked when one particulra group of two college-aged kids not associated with this area presented a plan as well thought out as it was.

The downtown dilemma is fascinatingly complicated in its magnificent simplicity.

I was there. I went up to each team. I asked them. Can you tell me how you incorporated the Promised 680' Downtown Public Pier in your design? Were we suppose to? A response back from more than one team. But can you imagine how that would have effected the designs if they had been given that teeny bit of information.

Now go back and look at the introduction date of 2010-856.

2011-560- Was at city hall today. This is still an active piece of legislation. Will be in Rules and Finance. $23,500,000 we are saying bye, bye to a ton of dough. We don't have any budget problems.

This was also discussed at the Aug.31, 2011 Waterways FIND subcommittee meeting on identifying canoe and kayak launches in Duval county.

The bottom line-The Public Trust is being totally crushed when it comes to Public Access and economic opportunity to our St. Johns River our American Heritage River a federal innitiative.

I was at this presentation and out of 6 teams some said the pier should be saved and used. One team recognized the use of a shipping container. How about some food trucks on the pier to be part of a small cluster?
