Title: Jags V/S Titans - Monday Night Football in Jacksonville
Post by: Non-RedNeck Westsider on October 11, 2010, 05:26:47 PM
Monday night's game will not be a thing of beauty.  It will not be your Welcome to the New NFL, Basketball on Grass.  It will not be a game to take the younger kids to see.  What you will see this coming Monday night will be two teams with a bitter history.  Two teams that have an established identity as a run-first, smash-you-in-the-mouth team that isn't afraid to play until the end of the whistle's echo.  Two teams that are playing for first place in a division that is usually dominated by a certain Peyton Manning.  After Monday, only one team will be able to lay claim to that coveted position and that team will be decked out in Teal.

Go Jags.

Enough of the drama.  We will see two QB that are better known for running the bal than throwing it;  two running backs that are polar opposited of one another.  CJ for his blazing speed and elusivness.  MJD for his stature and punishing runs.  The defenses are going to be matched up very well, also.  Both teams play a 4-3 with an emphasis on bending but not breaking.  I think each defense actually like the receivers to catch the ball so they can deliver that crushing hit.

I'll be there, will you.

none of those headlines are demeaning enough to the jags or to jacksonville as a city, so i doubt i will see any of them appear as a headline from any national media outlet.

the headline i see is "good thing the game was in jax, so they couldn't blackout curse nashville like they did buffalo and san diego".

why does the news media hate the jags and jacksonville so much?

Franchise envy and the fact the sports writers couldn't find a topless bar during the Super Bowl here.  Every year since the 1999 season, I make a point to make sure I am at the Flaming Thumbtack game.  Usually in the 4th quarter Jags fans in unison chant, "Jeff Fisher Sucks."  Next Monday Night will be electric!  4,468 tickets remain to lift the blackout.

Yeah, this wont be a throw it around the field sissy game.... there will be some good hitting Monday night!!!  Just don't let the Titans chippiness get to you.  They've been the dirtiest team in the league ever since f@@@face Fisher took over.

The ghosts of 1999 past could not be erased in 06(thank you Garrard), can they be erased Monday night????  Jax hasn't seen a game this big for a loooong time.

If anyone wants tickets, Im in section 142... Im buying two tickets for the seats next to mine, you can have them for half price if you come dressed in teal, get loud, and enjoy a fine night in the river city.  Also, you must not mind yelling, beer and cursing.   :)

God I hate Fisher and the Titans!!!!!!!

Who cares if they hate us? This is what we need to get over. We need to take the negative and turn it into positive energy. We need to stop feeding into everything the media says.

^It matters duvaldude08 if potential residents, companies or visitors only impression of the area is from some ignorant negative report.  The  reader may not think to themselves there is something terrible about Jacksonville more likely they may be influenced not to give Jax any consideration at all.

The point I'm trying to make is there no need to keep dwelling on it.  Dwelling is not going to change what they write. The media has been ignorant and negative and they will always be. If negative press about a football would discourage someone not to move here, they don't need to move here anyways. A football teams reps does not make a city. (to a certain degree) I just want us to enjoy the high times and let the good times roll! no need to dwell on negativity. Weve done it for too long.  ;)

I see Oakland got their pep talk from Goodell about their blackouts and low tickets sales. I am in awe that their attendance was only a little over 32,000 for the texans game. That is BAD. Hopefully we can continue to non-blackouts throughout the rest of the season.

I'm looking forward to a 50 yard line fist fight.  JDR would easily slam the DUvault door shut on Fish head Fisher.

I would LOOOOOVE to see a repeat of the 9-0 bruiser we played against the Squeelers on MNF back in '06.  That, my friend, was a beautiful game and football at it's finest!

Predictions anyone?  I'm sticking with my hope's for a repeat.  Jags 9 - Tits 0   Scooooobeeeee!!!

Anyone see this?

Not surprised, I bet it's all due to the media trashing the city and the team ever since 2004 before we hosted the Super Bowl.

Jaguars Least Popular NFL Team (http://"http://jacksonville.bizjournals.com/jacksonville/stories/2010/10/11/daily7.html")

The Titans were mentioned.  Apparently they fell 12 places to tie for 21st most popular with the Dolphins.

^ Not tha I can think of... unless we were able to tar-and-feather the Tits on their way out.

BYW, "Tits" is in no way meant to be derogatory or offensive to those wonderful mammary glands I love.  It is a simple abbreviation of the Titans, similar to the "Jags", "Pats", "Bucs", etc...  just take the first three letters of the name and add an "S".  Simple.

2,470 tickets to go

Per the Jags website it is 3150. Maybe the TU had a more updated number. Whatever the case we need to get rid of these tickets quick! Even if it is with an extention.

I promise the jags site said 2,470 last night.

That's great news! I'd love to go all season no blackouts, especially since last years sales were so bad. Perhaps then the NFL network will pick on the bucs.

Fieldafm any chance the seats you're offering are still available? I'm in 142 (row T) as well and need a couple extra tix!

Now at 28 and a hard core jag fan, I realize why we hate them. they better murder them!!!!!! I just looked at our schedule from 1999 and I fell out my chair!! I see why they said we made franchise history that year. A  4 year old team to almost make it to the superbowl. I wanna hurt somebody so bad right now!!!!!!!

There have been about 5 truly devastatingly sad days in my life.

One of them was that 1999 AFC Championship Game.

Even after Barlow's fumble late in the 2nd quarter, I vividly remember speaking with a travel agent standing in line getting a burger at halftime about Super Bowl packages still beaming with all the purely innocent optimism a young man in Jacksonville could have b/c his team and his town had yet to truly dissapoint him like they both would so many times later in life.  I still have her business card... kinda like the ex-girlfriend's hair brush that you can't seem to throw away b/c you picture her still combing through that gorgeous blonde hair in the morning, getting ready to take on the world together.  You miss the way she made you feel when she looked at you with those loving blue eyes and long for the day you can feel that way again.

When McNair ripped off that 50 yard run in the 4th quarter all that optmism flushed down the drain, probably dumped in the St Johns River, out to sea and ultimately floated across the ocean to be picked up by some kid in Spain... and that unrealized promise now haunts him like it still haunts me 11 years later.  I also tossed a full beer on to the ground about 32 yards into that run.

I'm sorry Spanish Pedro, if I could take it back I would in a heartbeat!

God I hate the freaking TITANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems to be a lame-assed tactic to make sure the tickets are sold - the game WILL be televised on channel 4 after all.  They just don't have the common sense to understand that when local media makes an issue over our ticket sales, then that opens the door for the national media vultures to attack.  With the amount of tickets we have left, I'd even be surprised if we have to use an extention, but now these fu**tards have opened the door for criticism and jacksonville bashing.  Gotta love the AP wire.

BT - the word has been out.  This is not the time to draw attention to it, IMO.

Locally, when we're that close, why would you put something like that in the media, when you know that it's going to get picked up.  If it was going to be that close, then I think that the situation shouldn't be brought to the forefront until the Jags have to file for an extension.

I can not believe they did that. Do say the word "blackout" until its offical. If we dont have enough sold by 8:30 well just request an extention and be fine. Thats new4jax for starting the rumor wheel.

You see the headline.  You read the story.  At the end, if the game is not blacked out it will be shown on TV4.  Watch TV4 not espn if you are going to the game.  That was a great post about the 1999 AFC Championship game, btw.  I have similar memories of that game and of hair brushes.

But back on topic.  I hate the Titans.  I wish Jacksond'ville would maim Jeff Fisher.  Go Jaguars!
Title: Re: Jags V/S Titans - Monday Night Football in Jacksonville

The game will most likely not be blacked out locally for two reasons: 1. people will buy the tickets up today; OR 2. the Jaguars will purchase the remaining tickets needed to lift the blackout.  The reason why number 2 is true is because under the Everbank/ Jaguar agreement, if a game is blacked out, then the Jags owe Everbank a certain sum of money.  That sum of money is greater than or at least equal to the cost of purchasing a couple of thousand tickets to lift the blackout.

Therefore, the game will not be blacked out locally on Monday night.

Go Jags.

What is the difference between the number needed to avoid a blackout and an actual sellout?

Yes very true. Because under the agreement they take back 100,000 of the naming rights money for every game thats blacked out. Im sure 1,000 tickets does not cost 100,000 dollar. Great observation!

I wouldn't count on that, there is probably something in the agreement that says the Jags can't buy up tickets to avoid paying Everbank if a game is blacked out.

50,957 vs 67,164.  The latter number is the stadium capaciy (including covers).  From the  67K number, the club seats, suites, terrace suites, visiting team allotment, and I believe handicapped seats are taken out of there.  Many of those are sold, but have no affect on the blackout number

No, they could.  NFL policy says that Weaver can buy the unsold seats at .34c per dollar to get the game on TV.  He has said publicy that he won't though. They did that for a long time, and all it did was train people that they could just watch on TV.

There are actually only two times in our history that were true "sellouts".  In 2004 against Pittsburgh (that was when the capacity was 76,877 - no covers - , and anyone who was at that game remembers the 20,000 steelers fans), and in 2007 against the Colts, at the current capacity of 67,164.

Every other game in our history, there were at least a couple of seats not sold.

when games are shown on cable, a local station is allowed to simulcast....and those local stations usually buy up the tickets so it can be shown (happened in Philly several times when I lived there in the early 1990s)

Yeah, last night during the late news, Sam Kouvaris confirmed that TV4 will be showing the game. Along with two or three hours of pregame stuff. And probably an hour of post game.

I'm not a football fan but it'd be nice for the Jaguars to win just to get the national media to maybe, possibly ease up a bit on the Jax bashing. Can't remember how many article headlines I read on the internet, prior to the Buffalo game, that said something like "the Bills will finally have a guaranteed win this week against the weak Jacksonville team."

My issue with the local advertising and marketing of Jags tix is that it seems to stop as soon as the "Blackout has been lifted" benchmark has been reached.  Local news both TV and radio have refered to the Monday night game as sold out when in fact 10 - 15k tickets are still available.

BridgeToll,

I noticed that therm "sold out" is used by the NFL and all media. They should just say the black out has been lifted. Saying a team sold out and they technially didnt, is kinda mis leading.

My issue with the local advertising and marketing of Jags tix is that it seems to stop as soon as the "Blackout has been lifted" benchmark has been reached.  Local news both TV and radio have refered to the Monday night game as sold out when in fact 10 - 15k tickets are still available.

Totally agree, but there really aren't that many tickets available.  The fuel gauge just shows general bowl tickets.  Before the year started, Wayne Waver was quoted as saying that 9K of the 11K club seats were sold via season tickets.  My guess is tickets distributed for this game will be in the 64-65 range, with capacity of 67.

Now, with regard to your original point of the post, Part of me thinks that is why they wait until the last second to say "blackout lifted".  I know they needed to get the tickets sold, but once they announce that, ticket sales grind to a halt.

Ahhh yes! Game day is here. A little tailgating at Marks during happy hour. A leisurly stroll down Bay to Everbank. Hopefully a great game for the Jags, the maybe a little celebratory beverage at Dos Gatos after. I love game day!

YES.  Game Day!!!!!!!

About to wrap up some business, head on down to CHP for lunch, and then set up tailgating HQ.  Roadking, if we win, first drink at DG is on me.  Black shorts, black converse, teal 'we are one' tshirt, with white long sleeve shirt underneath.

Here is all the info you need for those heading to the game

There is no way that 10-15k tickets are available. Maybe a few thousand club seats at the most.

Is there a way to find out?  Just going by the numbers available... 51k to avoid a blackout out of a total of 67k for a sellout.  We hit the 51k mark Friday... did we suddenly sell the remaining 15k in three days for the sellout?  Go Jags!

The club seats, terrace suites and other "premium" seating don't count towards the blackout total. So you can add all of those that were sold to the 51k figure.

Here we go... finally found something...

http://www.jaxdailyrecord.com/showstory.php?Story_id=43550

QuoteBlackout. A dirty word in Jacksonville.

It’s an economic necessity, says the National Football League. It’s a misuse of public trust, say the fans who can’t attend Jacksonville Jaguar games, either because of personal circumstances, lack of funds of just plain cheapness.

So, what triggers a blackout, the dreaded time when the Jags’ game is declared off local television because not enough tickets were sold? And how can the team say it’s blacked out because not enough seats were sold, and then announce over 60,000 “tickets distributed”?

It’s all apples and oranges.

The apple, in this case, is the total capacity of Alltel Stadium, which in the Jags’ setup is 76,877 minus the seats covered this year, 9,713. (The seats were covered to reduce the number needed to avoid a blackout.)

Thus, the capacity: 67,164.

Forget that number.

“You’re confusing the total seats with the blackout rule,” said Scott Loft, the team’s executive director of ticket sales and marketing. “You can almost sell out and still black out.”

Go back to the capacity, and break it down by category of seats:

Club seats: 11,228.

Luxury Suites: 1,694.

Terrace: 780.

General Bowl: 53,422.

(Those of you with a calculator will see that this doesn’t quite total 67,164. The 40 missing seats are somewhere in the mix.)

Now we get to the oranges.

“Only consider one number: the number of general bowl seats,” said Loft, doing his best to uncomplicate a complicated process. “Forget 67,164. Forget the number of covered seats. Forget the luxury seats. The number to work with is the number of General Bowl seats.”

53,422.

“That’s the number that the NFL uses to determine whether the game is on TV or not,” said Loft. The Jaguars have to sell about 98 percent of the total number of General Bowl seats to avoid a blackout. “They allow a little leeway, 2 percent or so for handicapped people, their escorts, players’ complimentary tickets and the seats we give to the USO.”

The team originally said the blackout number was a bit over 49,000. The National Football League came during the summer and audited the seats and upped it.

The blackout number: 50,500.

“That’s 50,500 of the 53,422,” emphasized Loft. “That’s not 50,500 of 67,164, which would be a sellout.”

OK, you can sell 64,000 of the 67,164 tickets and still be blacked out?

“Yes, said Loft, “if those unsold seats were in the General Bowl.”

Why wouldn’t they base the blackout on the total number of seats rather than just a portion of the stadium?

That answer goes back to the NFL and it’s a league-wide rule â€" not every team has luxury seats.

Now, the bottom line: How to do we stand on blackouts now?

“On an average, we’re about 3,000 short,” said Loft. “For Seattle (the first game,) about 1,900.”

Shawz before the Colts game is just new I would be leaving near the end of the 1st qtr,by then I figured the Colts would be up by two TDs, but they proved my wrong. Chris Johnson is the titans offense,,stop him, you stop the titans. Jags have a chance. Atleast were not facing Rivers, Brees, and Manning again. Those games worry me more than this one. Go Jags dont let us down!!!!!

Well the Titans have been inconsistent this year as well and we have the exact same record. So in my opinion its a even playing field and the game could go either way. Just as the Jags, The titans have had a slew of turnovers and have made alot of mistakes this season. Hopefully we can pull off a 37-17 victory like we did beginning of last season! :)

I hope you guys are right...

I can see this game playing out every which way.

Jags blow them out.

vince young implodes... or Garrard implodes.

CJ runs wild on our D.

vince young has another miracle performance where he just throws the ball up and it's a touchdown.

It's way too hard to predict... and that just gives me a bad feeling.

The Colts game may be the best home game of all time and last night might be the worst.

I've never seen a more frustrated group of fans. There were fights breaking out everywhere... from the stadium to the parking lot. Even I got into it with the guy behind me after he got out of line cursed out my fiancé for no reason.

I've said a million times over it's the product of the NFL and not the game outcome but... last night I would have been better off staying home and getting a full nights sleep.

They've done the night game flyover before... it's on youtube somewhere.

Inconsistency is the identity of the Jags. I think of them as 2 separate teams. When they're good they're the Jags... when they're bad I call them the Guars,

The crowd last night was fantastic. It is was easily the loudest that place has been in the last two years. I am not sure what is being reported, but someone I know who works in the command center for the stadium reported that 59,960 people came through the gates by 9:30.

It really was the worst possible scenario for the Jags. I have heard several people already say they wish they would have just stayed home, so they could have went to bed earlier.

I would have liked the fans singing if there was a flyover, which you can definitely do at night (think every east coast superbowl).  Without either of them it just seemed like they were just trying to cut costs.

Does anyone know if Fidelity turned their green lights back on??  How'd the city look on tv?

The city must be coursed or something. The more excited we get and the more we hype the jags up, the greater chance they have of literally dropping the ball. But how can we expect them to play well while in the shadows of abandoned crumbling buildings, no effective mass transit and ridiculous favoritism to a certain few.(including and especially motorists) There's not much of a city here to represent. If the jags keep on "NOT" playing, not only do I see them moving, I also see another round of building demolitions as we slip further into a backwater township. Wake up Jags! Your city depends on it!

It might have been a "horrible performance". But it doesn't bother me that we lost. I had a great time with my friends and family at the game.

Isn't that the point?
I am glad there is someone else like that me, that is not have a temper tandrum because we lost. I had a great time regardless.

The city and team was just embarrassed on national TV. Glad you guys had fun though. I'll drink more the next game. I don't expect the team to win every game but atleast look like you belong out there.

I agree Keith! I mean I want to be the 12th man! but the Jags didnt give us a chance. I had fun hanging out with my friends and cheering for the first 10 minutes, but after that it was all down hill!

There's a big difference between having trouble cheering for your team amidst a blowout loss and giving up on them until they've got a winning record again.

I believe the team got what was coming when everyone left after halftime. I really don't blame the fans for leaving early. As long as fans can get it out of their system, and come to the next excited but with realistic expectations we will be ok.

with no more big names coming to town except for maybe washington, i foresee some blackouts. they better beat the chiefs and cowboys if they want fans in the seats in november.

Houston game will probably be blacked out, Houston doesn't excite our fan base for some reason and you know Oakland wont. Pity I thought we had a real shot at making it this season with no B/O,but last night probably killed that. Its hard to have any expectations when you don't know which team is going to show up.

I heard an interesting take on this on a local sports talk today.  Guy from NYC called in and said leaving in the middle of game like last night is exactly the wrong thing to do.  He said in NY they stay and BOO... loudly.  Let em know you care about their performance.  He claimed that by leaving... you simply dont care.  Interesting viewpoint I thought...

Jags were booded this game and the Philly game. Many stadiums empty out in blow outs. This city has rallied behind this team, bought tickets, been loud at the games. Stop trying to put this on our fans. We did our job, we've had no black outs this year despite blow out loses. If we didnt care we wouldnt have bought tickets in the first place. Thats a dumb viewpoint IMO.

Jeez Keith... Not trying to put anything on the fans.  The fans were great!  Having read your other posts today you seemed to have taken this loss especially hard.  I can understand that... but there still are 10 more games to go.  Lighten up or ya gonna hurt yourself...

This city has a hard time taking outcomes in stride. We lose two straight, and the Jags are the worst team in franchise history. They beat the Colts, and they are a serious playoff contender. They lose to the Titans, and they are (again) the most horrible of teams. I agree that inconsistency is the absolute most frustrating thing about the Jags, but 3-3 isn't that bad of a start. There are quite a few teams in the league who would love to be sitting at 3-3 right now.

The city reacts to blackouts in the same way that they react to wins and losses. We fill the stadium for the first few home games, and the Jags are here to stay. We face the prospect of a couple of blackouts later in the season, and the Jags are without question on their way to LA. There is much to be proud of as far as the city's support of this team goes. We led the league in new season ticket sales, showed a national audience last night how much we love our NFL franchise, and have seen huge improvements since last year. Expecting zero blackouts this season might be a little unrealistic, in much the same way that expecting a couple of blackouts this season would be incredibly premature.

Losing sucks, especially in such fashion, but not everything has to be so doom and gloom. I had so much fun at the game last night, despite the outcome, and won't let the blow out deter me from going to future games.

What KILLED last season and made us the laughing stock of the league wasn't our performance on the field, but rather the fatalistic attitude of our citizens. People were jumping off the band wagon left and right as a way of breaking up with the Jags before the Jags broke up with them (in moving). It almost became a self-fullfilling prophecy.

Just keep going to the games, having fun with friends and family, and keeping expectations in check, and I think the Jags in Jacksonville will be just fine.

We could always try finding humor in the loss?

QuoteJacksonville Jaguars practice was delayed two hours this morning after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the practice field. After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance, unknown to the players, was the goal line. Practice was resumed this afternoon after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again.

That joke was funny 15-20 years ago the first time it was told.

It was even funnier when someone told it last week when the Jaguars were coming off of two straight games where they scored 30+ points.

I thought the fans singing the anthem was great. I agree with the rest of what you said. Not sure about a night time fly over. That might not be possible.

I would have liked the fans singing if there was a flyover, which you can definitely do at night (think every east coast superbowl).  Without either of them it just seemed like they were just trying to cut costs.

Does anyone know if Fidelity turned their green lights back on??  How'd the city look on tv?

City looked good! Showed Main Street Brigde, Mathews Brigde, Friendship Fountain & I think one of those river taxis...They also showed people leaving the game....I wasnt not feeling how on westwood 1 they said Jacksonville doesnt know how to take loses.

And if more people would go for the experience, then we would have a sold out stadium.  I have learned to temper my emotions based on winning and losing and just enjoy the people I'm with - the game becomes secondary.  Don't get me wrong, winning still feels good and losing still sucks, but one or the other doesn't decide whether I'll be back next week or not.  I'm with the team because it's like having a superbowl party 8 weeks out the year - grilling, drinking, hanging out and then you get to watch a football game!  It's fantastic.  I just wish 40k more people could see it this way and get over the wins and losses.

It was my first game and I was overwhelmed with the electric atmosphere. Will definitely be at the next home game! I so wish we would focus on the positive sometimes. We have naming right, were beating black outs and packing out the stadium. In a perfect world the team would be undefeated right now, however I already knew everything falling into place within one season was to good to be true. Just remember to realistic and just enjoy the game! Go Jags!!!!

While the loss was a bummer, it was the national press coverage of the game I found to be downright abysmal.

Even ESPN, the network of MNF wasn't even carrying a byline on their homepage. You had to go to the NFL link to get to see a promo for the game.

From my survey of national press, only two publications even noted the game prominently in their sports sections, The Tennessean and the Times-Union. Many papers only carried a wire story with one photo of Chris Johnson being tackled.

I haven't seen the overnights on the TV ratings yet, but I would surmise that they were not that good overall. While I know natives are worried about how Jax is displayed on national TV, to be honest, I think the game got the typical attention 2 small market teams with no "long term rivalries" would have.

It was clear to me that ESPN put in a marginal, if not contractually obligated effort on the game. When their homepage is more obsessed over Oklahoma being #1, then promoting a game on their own network, then you know that someone is getting short shrift.

Perhaps next time Del Rio and Fisher should have a war of words to make them pay attention. I guess "normal" football is just too boring these days.

Those 8 million were the fantasy degenerates that picked after the first round and didn't have either MJD or CJ2K on their teams.  What other reason to watch the game if you live west of the MS River.

He said that our fans are VERY dedicated to the team. That is the image we want. In light of todays game, win or lose, we gotta have their back. Regardless.

It amazes me how citizens of Jacksonville are so negative about the city. If its so horriable MOVE. And as far as the team, we have some major offesnse issues that were ignored in the off season, and now Del Rio is paying for it. And to make matters worse, we had sign a quarter that hadnt played since God knows when just to get by today. I will say he did his best though, and atleast he put some points on the bored, unlike Garrard did Monday. I still love my team. Every team in the franchise how been up and down, we are no exception. I have noticed people in Jacksonville hate the city more than people on the outside. With an attitude like that, were NEVER going to get anywhere.

FYI-we are not the worse team in the NFL presently so be thankful for that. There's a team today that will be 0-7. Im sure they have much more to worry about than we do.
