Title: Kudos to MetroJacksonville
Post by: JaxResident on September 24, 2010, 08:26:07 AM
I swear if MetroJacksonville.com was not around, I would go bonkers. It is such a pleasure in being able to read stories that have an objective spin on them and to actually see people who are open-minded, critical thinkers give an opinion, share advice or make a suggestion.

Jacksonville has so much to offer as a city and like with any city, there is certainly always room for improvement. There are great neighborhoods here. MetroJax covers news fairly in each of these areas. The photos that are shared further enhance each of the stories, editorials, etc.

The Times Union makes me want to throw up. Half the news on their website isn't worth mentioning and they are so biased in most of their news coverage.

At least here people have extreme intelligence and are not afraid to use it.

Thanks MetroJacksonville for being here and providing such a life saving service.

You have my eternal gratitude.

I agree, finding this site has been a big plus.

I agree.

This site is my main source for local news. I canceled my TU subscription awhile back, when they turned into nothing more than just repeating whatever was on the AP wire and got rid of most of their local content. And i quit going to their website when the roving group of 20 racist morons who they won't moderate took it over and started ruining every single topic. I quit reading folio weekly after they published, within a short span of time, a poorly written and non-sourced assassination piece on Stephen Dare and then turned around and declared Craig Van Horn was the future. Obviously we all know how well that turned out.

There has been one debacle or another like that that has made me quit paying attention to the local news outlets. The news channels are only a little better about having local content, but not by much, and they're just as illogically biased. MJ is where I get my news at this point, and I am very glad this site exists. What's here isn't "spun" like it is with the news channels or the TU, or folio weekly. This is pretty much the only news outlet in the city where things are presented factually and without a bunch of asinine bias.

Jacksonville is better place for having MJ.

I won't wrap fish in a copy of the TU! At least here, if nothing else, we can agree to disagree! Good ideas and suggestions abound..........too bad the freakin City won't take something of the content to heart!

Oh they do. They do.

The only reason we don't hear about it is because, if someone admits they need to make changes, then it means that what they were doing before was wrong. And the fact that we all know it was FUBAR doesn't matter, it's just face-saving. So you find yourself in this position where people use your ideas but you'll never get any credit for it.

Which, frankly, I don't think really bothers anybody around here. I think people on this forum are happy to help by sharing ideas or information that will improve the quality of life for everyone. I don't think anyone wants credit, we want improvement. But COJ is most certainly listening.

Well I sure as heck hope so! I could care less about taking credit for squat.............Jacksonville just needs to get up to speed with the rest of the world! Going to take some leadership and if I am considered a "goad" I wallow in that fact!

While I enjoy the dialog on MJ and have seen many cases of where common sense overruled idiocy, overall as an site of influence you have to keep a sense of perspective.

While MJ has many members, as most sites like this go, the majority are readers and a minority are posters.

Sites like this can effect change through dialog and being informative, but unfortunately as a civic or political influence it is very limited.

The users/viewers of MJ represent a very small fraction of the overall population of the metro area and reflect the interests of only those who have a personal interest in improving Jacksonville.

In the early days of the internet, a producer for a very popular TV show was once asked if they respond to internet postings/dialogs about the particular show they made. Their response was quite simple, "I have read them and they appear to represent a couple of hundred people, I make shows for millions of people"

How do you think a politician or someone of influence would respond to a MJ issue? The same?

The op mentioned "objective spin".

Aside from the national politics section, which is not the primary function of this board, this site engages in very little spinning of issues. (Can one spin issues objectively?)

As it relates to the stated mission of MJ, they seem quite objective, and many informed posters contribute a variety of opinions. I can't think of a better forum for citizens to discuss their city, it's planning and governance.

As Haole Boy would say:
I Agree.

Polls on this site regarding ages, zipcodes, political backgrounds, etc show this site reflects the community of Jacksonville pretty well. I am always impressed to learn the diversity of the posters, which after all is a small subset of the overall readership. People are reading because they care, whether they post or not. The site and posts get you thinking, and after all isn't that the point?

Your assumptions about readership are inaccurate.

You guys know that I've been part and/or have participated here since the onset...we may not always agree, but that doesn't mean that I don't respect all of the hard work that goes into maintaining the forum and the great stories/photos. In so many ways, MJ is a fantastic resource for our city.

I agree with most of the above postings and hope...SINCERELY HOPE that the COJ IS listening...because there are some very intelligent and well-meaning posters here, with the good of our City at heart.  MJ is INDEED a resource and a great one at that.

Thanks. Btw, the building you emailed about was called the Adrian Hotel. It was located on the NW corner of Clay and Houston Streets. The foundation is used as a surface parking lot today.

Yeah I get my news here about two or three days I read about it in the TU.  This site is a moment of rationality in an ever increasing irrational world.
