At tonight's city council meeting, seven of us spoke during general comments and asked for a moratorium on demolitions in Springfield.
Some of the points that we spoke on: the possible loss of our National Historic Designation if too many houses are lost; the number of houses currently condemned (139); Miss Maggie's project as a reflection on the community's involvement in working toward a solution for the demolitions; the structural integrity of many of the homes on the condemned list.
Nicole got in touch with the owner of the property on Walnut Court which has a green tag. He came to the meeting tonight and spoke about his frustration. Preservation SOS is looking for a way to help him either restore or sell his home and keep it from being demolished. Perhaps we can do a PROJECT MOTHBALL on his house. No matter what, Jeff needs help and needs it quickly.
Hopefully, code enforcement will work with us and get a solution! I think there is one out there just waiting for us.
My compliments to you fine folks.
I am a carpenter by trade, and would be willing to provide (volunteer) help and expertise should the need arise and my schedule permit it. Weekends are usually best, but I work whenever the opportunity exists.
As of now I'm idle. Keep us posted.
About time that Dr Johnny got involved in something! Makes me wonder if he is considering running again? sheclown you know how to get me involved if needed!
I adore this place!!!
Thank you to the folks of Preservation SOS who attended and spoke to the council. I am so proud to know and work with all of you.
I want to make mention of an important piece in this process; behind every house is a face, and the human factor in this preservation project can not be ignored. The real story, about the real people, cause people to listen.
Like Miss Maggie, the owner of Walnut Court puts a face behind our goal of preservation. He makes our fight to save our houses real. I am so grateful he attended and spoke. We've got to help him. Somehow, someway it has to happen. And I am confident it will.
