Jacksonville moms and dads, lock up the children - it's for their own safety, according to Men's Health magazine.
Jacksonville is in last place out of 100 in the September edition's list of America's "Safest Cities for Children."
The article's first paragraph even takes a shot at the city, saying, "Some places are just too dangerous for children: crocodile ponds, stores that sell barbed wire, Jacksonville."
Men's Health, whose usual topics focus on male fitness, sex, weight loss and grooming, decided to do the children's safety ranking for the first time because families are part of a man's life, said Editor Matt Marion.
"Men's Health really does encompass all areas of a man's life, and we look at the relationships in his life," Marion said. "... We also figured it was a good time since kids are going back to school and it can be an anxious time, and some parents wonder just how safe my child will be."

QuoteSome places are just too dangerous for children: crocodile ponds, stores that sell barbed wire, Jacksonville. . . . Okay, the Sunshine State's largest city may not be that unsafe, but it's probably riskier than its residents realize. When we looked at perils posed to children in 100 cities, Jacksonville came in as riskiest.
The data: accidental death rates for kids ages 5 to 14 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), number of car-seat inspection locations per child (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), sex offenders per capita (state and national registries), percentage of abused children protected from further abuse (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), and the strength of child-restraint laws and bike-helmet laws (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).

Are those stats right? I mean I know we have a lot of sex offenders, but the others? WOW.
Just stay away from InTown Suites.

Crocodile ponds..............the only crocodile ponds in Jacksovnille are in the Zoo.
Stores that sell barbed wire.........and nails, and screws, and hammers, and automobiles
I think they don't know what they are talking about. Must be some yankee city people with not enough to do.
To be fair, they said nothing about crocodile ponds being in Jacksonville. If i'm reading it correctly, they state that places like crocodile ponds, stores that sell barbed wire and Jacksonville are dangerous places for children.
I was kinda shocked by the ranking for accidental deaths and abuse?
I give more credence to the lists on Cracked.com than Men's Health.
Yeah I’d put Men’s Health’s journalistic integrity right up there with other reliable fact finding mags like Maxim.
If Jax is so bad why did Parenting magazine rank us as one of the best cities for families?

Men's health is nothing more than the male version of Cosmopolitan.
