Title: Local Meat Markets
Post by: acme54321 on August 13, 2010, 10:50:55 AM
Not really "dining", but figured this section has to do with food.

Does anyone know of any goof local meat markets around town?  I live in St Nick and am looking for somewhere to get some quality meat to fill my smoker with tomorrow.  Looking for boston butts, country ribs, baby back, whatever.

Thanks

Tillman's in Mandarin. It's on Old St Augustine Rd about a mile after you get off of San Jose.  Or Pine Grove meat market in Avondale.

Pinegrove is great... but if you're smoking meat I wouldnt go that route.  Winn Dixie meat department is your best bet.  They have the best deals on shoulder, butts, etc.  They normally always have rib specials this time of the year.  I got a great deal on baby backs two weeks ago that I took camping with me.  Cheapness is the beauty of smoking meat anyway, lol.

From time to time, Sams will have a good buy on tenderloin and I'll cut steaks off that.

But stuff for smoking, WD all day long.

Tillman's sells "no roll" which is a grade below 'choice." It does have a good flavor; I wonder if they tenderize it.
Costco has Prime Ribeyes and N Y Strips.
They are the Best.

Check out Sam's Club. If you're not a member and do a lot of smoking it's worth the membership. They have good prices on butts (two in a pack) baby backs, short and full ribs (three slabs to a pack.) Check out the spice section if you do a dry rub- very good prices. You can get the disposable aluminum pans for the chuckies there too.

Also our mullet run will happen soon. Tough to beat smoked mullet!!

When I lived in Ortega, I used to go to the Carroll's off of Blanding near Wilson. I was never disappointed.

Geeze, Im having all the shrimp I can handle right now!!!  This has been the best shrimp run that I can remember, lol.

I agree though, smoked St Johns mullet makes the fall more tolerable.

Passed by the other day on the way to Lowe's and thought 'wow, I miss that place'!!!!  Good call.

Last night I watched the doc "Food Inc." which has motivated me to make change in my food purchases. I've been going to the Beaver St. Farmer's Market for a couple years now (thanks Metro-Jax) and I would like to find a similar market with a local meat selection.

Anyone know of any local meat farmers offering all natural natural meat from a stress free environment?

Has anyone tried meat from Ashlin Farms?

QuoteAt Ashlin Farms, our goal is to provide a high-quality, natural product using natural means to sustain the land and cattle.  Ashlin Farms produces 100% natural beef.
Our animals are cared for in a stress-free environment where they graze on fresh grass fields. Our beef is raised without the administration of antibiotics or growth hormones. Our grass-fed cattle are rotated to new paddocks of grass daily. They have no grain supplement in their diet and only eat grass and hay.

Shwaz, there is a thread dedicated to local farms getting their meats. These farms have their own website where you can order meats and proteins you want, and they would be happy to deliver to their vendors at the local market places like one at Neptune Beach. They also bring their own selection for you to check it out too.

Here is the link to that farm: http://www.cognitofarm.com/ (http://www.cognitofarm.com/)

Thanks Josh... this is exactly what I was looking for. It's a shame they don't deliver to RAM or the Beaver St. market or anywhere in Jacksonville. I might try the delivery option. The prices are considerably higher but my goal is to cut down on overall meat intake as well as move away from purchasing from the multi-national food conglomerates.

Thanks again  for the heads-up.

Shwaz, you should just start buying your meat from those guys with the freezers in the back of their trucks.  They deliver and they promise that it's hormone free, dry-aged, angus this, kobe that or whatever else they think will get you to buy 25 steaks for $30.

I'm a little cautious about the meat the trucks you speak of... I would imagine that it's really just the same meat from the same processors flash frozen and sold door to door.

I'd like some recommendations about fish markets as well.

I've had a much easier time finding local fish markets... being next to the ocean they're everywhere.

Beachside Seafood in Jax Beach has a pretty nice selection and great restaurant next door.

Fisherman's Dock in Mandarin has a solid selection - phenomenal shrimp and fair prices.

Beaver St. has a small selection of seafood available too that is extremely reasonable and really fresh.

Shwaz,

From Cognito Farm's How To Buy page...

QuoteWe deliver pre-ordered farm products to the Beaches Green Market in Neptune Beach on the 2nd and 4th Saturday afternoon of each month, the St. Augustine Old City Market at the Amphitheater on the 3rd Saturday morning of each month and the Downtown Gainesville Union Street Market on the 1st Wednesday afternoon of each month.  Click on the Market and Event Schedule tab above for more details.

Technically, they are still in Jacksonville. Maybe you should convince them to come to RAM.

Shiz. I thought when you mentioned delivery it was home delivery. I believe Ashlin Farms offers home delivery but that makes sense because they're in Jacksonville.

I would love to give Cognito a try but the schedule and drive-time make it difficult. I sent them an email to see if any Jacksonville locations were in the works.

Ideally I'd like some place close to home that I could pick up a selection of beef, poultry, pork & eggs on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

J.D. Beef, www.jdbeef.com, sells at RAM every Saturday.  "All natural, free range Angus beef.  No antibiotics, hormones, steroid's."  Haven't tried them personally (don't eat much meat ), but they've been vetted by the RAM board.

Really good seafood from "The Seafood Gourmet" at 5043 San Jose Blvd.  The owner is Didier Busnot, a classically trained French chef (and ex-Foreign Legion parachutist) who got tired of the restaurant business.  He buys and cuts all of his own fish and makes up en papillot dishes fresh every day for cooking at home.  Absolutely delicious and highly recommended.

www.alrosas.com  located in Citra.  Deliveries once a month to OP Mall.  (Might need to contact them the website no longer lists OP  :-\  )

I've been very satisfied with our purchases.  It's convenient for me on work trips, I always try to stop if I am in the area.

Food inc.  is an eye opener! Really can change one's outlook on eating!

Here is another resource I like to use  http://www.eatwild.com/products/florida.html
