It was a mural of the Jacksonville Jaguars "First Team" completed back in '98. It was painted over in 2004. Check out this website http://www.web3direct.com/anne/muralprints.htm

wow. that would convince me to buy a ticket. Show's a city actual gives a shit about their team to a non-native.

now that this is a City building...it would seem perfectly set to have the mural restored. At the time it was painted on there the Ed Ball building was occupied by First Union...which became Wachovia.

Downtown Vision is in it now...but if they were to paint a new mural i wouldn't recommend painting players nor coaches because like in the "First Team" pic. all of the players either relocated to another team or has retired. Maybe they could do the teams as a whole. For ex. the Jags logo as well as the Suns logo. And maybe even the Sharks logo because the Sharks seem to have a strong fan base.

The first team seems entirely appropriate. It's our history. Quite a shame it isn't still there, even if it was just a tad uncouth.

At the time this was up, I did not live in Jacksonville..  But if the majority would see it restored, I agree.. Its a cool picture.

Anyone know why it was painted over?

Let me guess.  It became part of our history, so we had to demolish it.  :-X

I dont think it was here quite THAT LONG, but who knows?  :P

I think it would be a good idea to have somethign repainted there. With all the traffic passing by on I-95 it shows the City really supports our teams and creates some sort of civic pride. Maybe we can lobby the City to have something painted back?

The same lady that painted the First Team mural also painted "The Cat House" on the corner of Bay and ocean.

A black background, the logo, and the words "WE ARE JAGUARS".  Simple and will never get outdated.

For some reason I have always envisioned that building as a huge nightclub unlike any we have here in Jacksonville right now.  It could be like Opera in Atl, or Mansion in Miami.  Clubbing isn't my thing, but this building has high ceilings, open space, abundant nearby parking, nearby bars, etc.  The city will come up with an excuse to tear the building down like its structural integrity can't be repaired to original condition.  A nightclub offers an investor the chance to fight back and say all we need are the outside frame walls' detailing and we can easily and cheaply rebuild the rest, including the roof and support columns.  It's easy to rebuild the roof and a nightclub doesn't necessarily need various rooms (though the ones that do are usually the coolest).  Thoughts?

The current owners are listed as Guaranty Investments, Inc, but according to the secretary of state website all entities with that name are currently inactive.  Who owns the building?  And unfortunately it's only 7,650 SF apparently.

Also, FYI:  The building next door is in pre-foreclosure.  Isn't that the building with the Ivey?  And does anyone know what's going on there?  The owner of that building was Mary Sorrell under the entity name Protokore, Inc (disbanded).  She is from Neptune Beach.  Does anyone know her?

I would be hesitant to paint a slogan there because it seems like it would be more likely to be painted over in the near future due to outdated slogans.

Maybe...but that's become a stadium chant....IMO it's a chance to help solidify tradition.

The building would also house a nice restaurant, or possibly some lofts.   In any case, I would hope it is saved.. It is old school and I love the look of old school.. which is probably why I like working on an old school. :D

I liked the Jaguars mural, because it was something out-of-the-box and unexpected, something you don't see in every city you pass by on the interstate. That said, I think it would be cooler to see this wall used for something like the murals of whales you see all over the world by Wyland (http://www.wyland.com/), but instead something more regionally important, like a manatee or pelican, or a whole scene with several elements -- the beach, sabal palmettos (state tree), etc.

I don't think this prominent of a canvas should be just an insular, local pride, sports-related symbol. This is something people entering Florida for any number of reasons pass by, who couldn't care less about the Jaguars or how much WE may care about them, and it would show (as inaccurate as it may be) that we actually care as much about the amazing region we call home and the beautiful natural surroundings this city was built in. It would tie this city in to the rest of Florida, instead of being so inward-focused. We do a terrible job of being the gateway to a wonderful state, and it's certainly reciprocated in how little the rest of the state cares about Jacksonville.

Downtown already has an abundance of logos representing the corporate world, and that's what I think of when I think of an NFL team. Something local executives want to see out their office window. A departure from that would REALLY stand out.

I promise you, there are a lot of people in the city, including in the administration, who care passionately about their team.  I hope you will consider buying a ticket too, as even if you aren't a Jaguar fan, the gameday experience is superb.  No team in pro sports reaches out to its fans more than this one.

There has been talk of it but still not official. It's a shame too because Klutho was a very prominent architect in Jacksonville's history.

#71 is a legend. 82 & 28 have not done enough off the field. Where is 28 btw is he still playing. Whens he going sign his one day contract and retire in the right colors. He knows we still love him.

Taylor's with New England and will probably start.  He's not ready to retire just yet.  He always said he wanted to pass Jim Brown in total rushing yardage before he retired, as I recall.

I remember that mural. It made me smile whenever I saw it, and served as a reminder that the Jaguars go with Jacksonville.

Charlotte had a similar one but for the Hornets, so I thought it was a First Union bank building sort of thing.

The coach and most of the players in the mural either relocted or retired. Its like keeping a Lebron James mural up in Cleveland...

The mural needed upkeep and Wachovia ultimately sold the building.

Oh, wait, I was channeling Clay Yarborough.  Never mind.

I agree fsujax - that's quite a blank canvas and I liked the old Jags mural.

Question - does the new Court House block the view from I-95?

There's a big difference between the two. James was not part of the foundations of the Cavaliers.

I agree with James not being apart of the Cavaliers' foundations...BUT like it side before...once a player or coach leaves the team for another franchise, i dont think a mural with that player or coach should advertised here anymore. Yea they were "the first team" but thats it...maybe if there was a superbowl trophy in the mix then that would be a different story. Other than going to the playoffs early in the franchise's history, that team hasn't done anything to deserve a long lasting mural of them. I believe if there ever was a mural again then it should be more of a Jaguars as a whole kind of thing instead of individual players and coches. (they come and go)

Its not an advertisement. The first team is the first. The image is more important than who the image is of.  Its a piece of artwork that Jax can claim as its own. Id love to have a copy or replica for my living room, but they dont sell them. PLUS no one in the art left on bad terms. All those guys are still welcome in Jax. #6 cant say that.
