I'd love to see this downtown. However I doubt the powers to be would ever implement it. Story below from Engadget.
San Francisco rolls out new smart parking meters with 'demand-responsive pricing'
San Francisco has been working on making parking "smarter" for quite a while now, and it's just recently taken another big step in that direction by starting to replace over 5,000 older parking meters with the snazzy new model pictured above. Those will not only let you pay with a credit or debit card (and soon a special SFMTA card), but automatically adjust parking rates based on supply and demand, which means you could pay anywhere from $0.25 to $6.00 an hour depending on how many free spaces there are. Those rates are determined with the aid of some sensors that keep a constant watch on parking spaces, which also means you'll be able to check for free spaces in an area on your phone or your computer before you even leave the house. All downtown parking meters should be removed and replaced with limit signs. The City has the technology to enforce it. Downtown parking meters are destroying what little retail business Jacksonville has left.

I'm not sure I 100% agree with this statement. I ocassionally visit downtown for lunch and I don't find problem parking at a meter. I've learned to keep a few quarters in my car, after all it is just a few quarters and a small walk. Now the outrageous price tags on parking lots downtown, that in my opinion is a problem.
I think our city needs to focus on larger priorities right now, like getting people to actually go Downtown other than the daily workforce. There is no reason for high dollar meters or even changing the system if it's not even being utilized to it's fullest extent.
No bashing anything or any ideas, just throwing my two cents in.

Get rid of the meters. Get rid of the bums. Fix the street lights. Put visible police on the street day and night. It's as simple as that. How many times does it have to be repeated. I look back in archived Metrojacksonville posts, and the same thing was being said 8+ years ago.
Downtown Vision Incorporated has proved to be a fraud and failure, yet continues to be funded by an uninformed City Hall with money confiscated from downtown property owners. One more time: Dissolve DVI, keep the special property tax assessment in place and give it to the Sheriff for dedicated and increased patrol of the BID.

San Francisco needs these meters because they have more people then they can deal with. Jacksonville wishes it had that problem :(

Yeah that's the whole point. Getting rid of the meters would eliminate a main reason people don't go downtown.

I disagree but to each there own opinion I guess. I think meters are the last thing on someones mind, then again I generally go down there past 6pm in which case it's free, or when I do go during the day a few quarters takes care of the problem. Better than paying $5+ a day for a lot spot. A "main" reason people don't go downtown is because of its homeless population and lack of things to do. But those are both reasons that have nothing to do with meter parking.
