QuoteMiami commissioners passed one of the most controversial zoning issues in years Thursday, when they voted to allow developer Mark Siffin to erect a pair of electronic signs almost 500 feet high that will tower over downtown.
The two-hour discussion -- filled with speeches from union representatives for the project and residents opposing it -- came down to money.
In the end, commissioners voted 4-1 to allow the towers, a parking garage and, ultimately, a retail center, on Biscayne Boulevard next to the Arsht Center, because it means millions of dollars in new revenue for the cash-strapped city.
Commissioners Marc Sarnoff, Wifredo Gort, Richard P. Dunn II and Francis Suarez voted in favor. Commissioner Frank Corollo voted against the measure.
Miami will receive more than $2 million a year in fees and another $800,000 annually will go into a trust for a museum park, a planned showcase for Bicentennial Park that is struggling to come up with cash.

There's a building in DT Miami with a huge Ipod ad plastered against the entire side of the building. It makes the old Jaguars mural look small, lol.
I actually like those.
But gee.........just think of the money JTA can bring in.......and waste again!
Wow i actually like these. Kudos Miami.
I don't understand the comparison. One is a 5,000 little covered bench and the other a multiple million dollar mega condo tower, retail complex and huge ad towers covering two city blocks.
Actually, a better comparison to SAffin,s Citisquare would be the Shipyards.
JTA needs to sell an add on the bus stop first...You would think there would be a lot of interest considering it is the first bus stop ad in Jacksonville history.

I was trying being creative with the title:)
I must be design-impaired. These are ugly?
I'll never understand the hoopla when it comes to big ads. I remember Shaq and Kobe on the sides of two buidlings in LA...I thought it looked cool. Same for all the neon lights in Times Square and Picadilly Circus. When allowed to be creative, ads can--wait for it--ENHANCE an area. They don't always have to be billboards. They're nothing more than artwork that aim to sell a product, but still, it's art. Am I wrong?
...And is that why the Jaguars mural was whitewashed? Because it was to big? Because it had "old" players on it? Anyone know the story with that?
Cool, I really like these.

Yeah, the old Days Inn off I-95...
Those are supposed to be ugly? I think they look cool and futuristic. And in no way comparable to little movie-poster sized ads on a bus shelter.
Just found this in DT Charlotte, little, unobtrusive, but eye catching as you stroll down the street (and most likely not too expensive!)

Good for Miami.
@ Uptown, We had advertising like that in San Marco once upon a time.
I wonder if something like this would be against the rules...
