Title: Move to Jax from Tallahassee a good idea?
Post by: TD* on July 14, 2010, 12:47:51 AM
Ok I just wanna be real with you folks. Tallahassee has served me well for a long time. I was born here and now im 24. I went to FSU and graduated from there.

But, for the last year I have been out of work. I have applied high and low, and not had any luck thus far. I know part of the reason is not just the city, or the economy, its tough out there for everyone.

However, I have reached my breaking point. Im tired of applying day after day, following up with calls, going in person speaking with managers and dropping off my resume in person.

The job market is just locked up here...

I know that its tight everywhere, but I would hope moving to a larger city that their would me more opportunities available..

I am well versed in tech and internet, and have a passion for this area.

In your best opinion and compared to the rest of your friends now currently employed or unemployed how is the job market in jax?

My grandparents live in Jax and my family lives here in Tallahassee.

I really think its time for a change. I want to be optimistic but its so hard coming up short for so long. Patience is not one of my strengths, but its been a year and I know their must be something I could do.

Thanks for your responses.

There are always more opportunities in a bigger city....but also more "fish in the sea".

That said, I have lived in both Tally and Jax...and am very happy here

^ What they said.  Spend a couple days here handing out your resume (if you can swing it) and check out some apartments.  You can live here just as inexpensively as Tally and if you were to get bored with one area of town down the road just switch!  Its like a whole new city every time.  Also, I'd recommend staying within or along the I295/9A beltline to reduce time spent commuting.

Thanks for the responses... Maybe I should set up a day, stake out some businesses I want to apply at and make a day out of it.

By chance, do any of you know of any place hiring?

Thanks

TD,  There are a lot of tech jobs here in Jax.  I just met someone who was hired from Tally (state gov't) into the IT dept of Lender Processing Services here.

College towns can be tough job markets because of students working part time and graduates who want to stick around in their college town.

AT&T (just a suggestion) sends me weekly ,via email , job postings in the Jacksonville area.  You said your Grandparents live here ...so stay with them (suggestion) and pass out the resumes. Also gives you a chance to explore the City.  Jason suggested wisely, to locate with close access to the major thoroughfares .. I would agree..  I live in an area of the City , with the Beaches only a few minutes drive away... I like it here, but theres some good areas all over.. AVOID Baymeadows  West of Southside Blvd and East of 95.. Rough area.

Thanks for the ideas...

I wouldn't mind working for a cell phone company.. thats my area of expertise...

My grandparents live in Orange Park which is nice, and close to everything via i295 access, and Roosevelt blvd as well as blanding.... I can get into downtown easily if I needed to living in that area..

I would really really love to live in Riverside!! but i know thats a pipe dream and very expensive!

I love that area its so beautiful..

But before I start lusting over areas to live I have to find a job... which seems to be the hardest part.

AT&T is scheduled to lay off a whole bunch of cellphone technical people in September as well as their U-Verse backbone installation people.  Talk inside the company is that management wants to downsize the landline business and sell it off so that they can become just a wireless company.

Have no clue as to the accuracy of the talk.

Riverside is no more expensive to live than any other area of town.  Just have to look around.  There are deals everywhere especially if your a first time homebuyer.

You can expect to rent a 1 bedroom anywhere from $500 to $700.  2 beds will likely range from $600 on up.  I'd say your safe bedgeting for $700 to $800 a month for a descent place in a nice area.

Riverside is a really nice area now.. not quite as nice back in the day when I lived there.  It has come a long ways...

BTW.... "Man in the box"  How you doing?  I haven't talked to you in ages !

When did Baymeadows become a rough area? I stay out there now and love, compared to arlington which is where I used to say (now THAT is a rough area, when you here gunshots and fighting all night). Where I stay is quiet as a mouse has little to no police activity. Baymeadows has pockets of apartments that are problems, (Bentely Green, Village of Baymeadows, Baytree just to name a few.) But there are also some nice one like Green Tree place, Hunters ridge and some newer ones that I dont even know the name of.  but there area is not by any means "rough", and the newer end over by 9A is actually is beautiful!!

Getting job is more about connections then skills.Unless you have some crazy skills to show very unlikely you will get job based on that alone.
Now knowing manager or someone inside company is better trick then any other resume.
Make friends with people in companies and that will give you better chance in getting and keeping job.Sell yourself,be a politician.

Just a few years ago , I lived on Old Baymeadows Road.  Twice in my life I lived in the same Apartment complex..  moved back there thinking it was a nice place before and it was going to be only temporary... and the second time around it was quite different... probably just as rough as some areas of Arlington.  The Area between SS Blvd and 95 is not desirable , IMO ..  certainly nowhere near as safe as 25 years ago..but then I suppose that could be said for anywhere.

Yes, I came over last summer, for the Keith Urban Concert at the Veterans memorial Arena. It was a very nice concert, and when we walked out, it was pouring down rain! We had to walk back to water St where our hotel was right on the river.

Interesting experience...

Then we Drove down riverside drive, and I like the area sooooo much... Its beautiful, and has the perfect blend of shopping, restaurants and residential, in proximity to the river and downtown.

I wish i could move to this area, I just need a job! don't we all.

Ahhh, well, I think I will have to come back over this summer for another trip to re-visit my favorite areas!

I moved from Tallahassee to Jacksonville a little over 4 years ago (received a job offer). I don't regret it, but my situation was a little different (I moved from the space coast to Tallahassee to attend FSU, graduated and worked there for a few years.) Jacksonville has its fair share of flaws and has a lot of work to do to rectify them, but I actually find it to be a great balance of big city and small town. I've met a lot of great people here, love having the beach nearby, actual seasons (as short as they may be, they're still more prominent than essentially anywhere else in Florida) and an airport that doesn't gouge quite as bad as TLH did.

It's initially a little intimidating as there is a substantially higher amount of violent crime here versus Tallahassee, but once you're use to the area, you know what places and type of people to avoid, your comfort level rises pretty quickly. It's also extremely nice to be close to other cities, one of the most aggravating things about Tallahassee was having to drive 2.5 hours to the next town (That said, show some love to Tom Brown park while you're still there, it's still one of the nicest in the state and one of the few things I really miss about Tallahassee, that and AYCD bars, and, well, being in college) I say it's a worthwhile move.

I was in a conversation with a few people a while back about Florida in general and that "weird" reputation we can't seem to shake. The odd thing about it is before moving to Jacksonville I had only ever heard negative things about the place, but they had all brought up that Jacksonville is the one city in the area that they didn't really mind, it had some hints of personality in spots which is more than you can say for a majority of the state. I agree with that. The place is trying to diversify but there are certain forces pushing back against it, and it's understandable as Jacksonville comes off as a bit of a old country town, but if these forces ever start embracing the city and neighborhoods for what they are, the place would really take off.

tl;dr: Jacksonville has potential and I like it better than Tallahassee.

Well, as it turns out, I will be attending Grad school in either Tallahassee or Gainesville this Fall.

So, i always have the option to move to Jax after im out of School.
