What is the history, pun intended, of the Historical Society preventing demolitions?  Everyone (nearly) in this forum bemoans them, but has the JHS worked arduously against them?

Lol, yes, they are anti-demolition. The local landmark program was a pretty big success - which was done while Matt Carlucci was simultaneously on the city council and the JHS board.

Although keep in mind that JHS is a really small non-profit organization that, frankly, only stays alive through the heroic efforts of a small handful of dedicated people.

Their biggest activities have been the restoration of Old St Andrews Church and the Merrill House, as well as the publication of several original books on Jax History. The current big project is the restoration of Old St Luke's Hospital into an historical archives building; however, from what I've heard, they aren't even close to having enough money to actually pull it off.
