Sucks. I can't make it. I already have two other meetings at city hall planned that day and I still have a day job to attend.
Its important, but if you really want the non-governmental dependent sector to attend, these things need to be held at times where the general public can attend. Like governmental workers, most working residents in the city have jobs they are required to be at between the hours of 8am and 5pm. That means, there's a good chance the general public won't make it or be fairly represented.
I am sure showing anger with the process and DVI will get you far!
Well it did get women the right to vote and blacks the right to drink out of the same water fountains as whites...
Seriously though, tufsu1, has a point. Stephen, I know things didn't work out the way you planned, but the meeting with Metro Jacksonville (if I'm understanding it right), was supposed to be a small scale thing, similar to the meetings we had with Suzanne Jenkins, Adam Hollingsworth, Micheal Blaylock and others. That sounds completely different than what DVI has set up, even if some may feel they are the same. If so, you should still be able to put together a separate meeting with Jay Jabour to discuss whatever was originally intended.
What flower gardens? Oh, I get it...that's a crypto-fascist metaphor for thermonuclear war. So for the IQ challenged bloggers, you are saying they're going to war over parking meters? There's nothing worse then a city that doesn't have a smart parking meter system except for maybe a meeting with DVI invited guests.

just re read my own post and cant help but snicker at the sucking hitlers balls in hell comment.
and phrases like this, whether cynical or not, are why people "roll their eyes" at things you say!
I was right...it's on! I checked out DVI's web page and found a vested interest in parking meters. Does their budget come from parking meters or the use of parking meters? Will i ever find out?

tufsu
besides, lighten up, tufsu, my comments in this thread are obviously meant to be light and amusing. Your reaction would lead one to think that you were employed by one of the groups mentioned. Even if so, chiding me for my 'anger' my 'cynicism' or implying my political irrelevance probably wouldn't change my basic opinions. Especially since im clearly not angry, and my continued participation kindof proves my diehard optimism---which incidentally is the opposite of cynicism.
"Jokes" involving Hitler are not often light and amusing....they are almost always in poor taste...and no, I am not employed by DVI, etc....I am a private sector urban planner....but I am also Jewish!
oh yeah...I'm also a downtown resident too!
some (not me) would argue that Mel Brooks, being Jewish, has the right....
all that said, my main point is to try and be calm and make the most out of the meeting....whether you like DVI or not, they are the downtown association....and most of their ideas and programs are similar to other similar organizations around the country....check out http://www.ida-downtown.org/eweb/startpage.aspx
and no....I will not be at the meeting...as Lake said, its during work hours!
"they are the downtown association..." okay, I'll bite. Do they own downtown? Who died and left them the key to the bunker? If I don't join their party, adopt their views on the parking meter issue, OR look and act like them, will I get thrown in the proverbial microwave? Who are their sponsors?
We get this same issue in Springfield.
Its not that they rule the roost, its that they, like it or not, have a big voice in city business when it comes to downtown. If you want a more dramatic impact, your efforts might be better spent trying to get it done through them (sometimes in spite of them). However, we are a government of and by the people, so you should always feel free to go to your representative and try to get things done that way too.
So did this meeting take place and if so did anyone attend?
Stephen Dare, I am shocked to see this comment on Hitlers nether regions in the inferno... I thought you were better bred, read, and of the literary stripe, then to fall prey to this most unfortunate error in location, of the late, beloved Fuhrer... Why just this past week, I read that Elvis, was seen on a rusty Nazi U-Boat, off the Coast of Amelia Island, playing his guitar, for Adolph, John Kennedy, and Marylin Monroe, as they sipped Bacardi's, and Supped on Vilano Beach Oysters. I know this to be true Stephen, as I read the Weekly World News. Count on it man! You really should get a subscription.
You'll be better informed to take on the likes of DVI, JEDC and City Hall...
