Ugh this irritates me. http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2010-06-10/story/jacksonville-fountain-defiled (http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2010-06-10/story/jacksonville-fountain-defiled)
If this is the same place, I noticed in late March that the memorial had already been modified by some knucklehead who wrote "The World is Yours" on the globe below the beautiful Beaux Arts figurine of the war memorial, a sterling example of how public art could respond to enormous historical loss from WWI. Yeah, I get the Scarface reference, dumb f**k., can we start with cutting off your hands?
This really pisses me off! Probably some of the grafitti crews that tag School #4 and other buildings in the area. Some people just have nothing better to do with their lives. I dont know about cutting their hands off , but the fingers would be ok . little sh&%s!
I'm so sick and tired of idiots in this city. They need to keep their comments to the jacksonville.com comments sections and not deface a memorial fountain that is bigger and more important in meaning than their petty little grievances.
I have spent more than a few youthfully drunken hours at this park. My fiends and I even had a bottle rocket war there in the aftermath of the 4th of July. Left over fireworks and alcohol do mix, as it turns out.
My generation was just as unruly as the current one, but we did not leave damage in our wake. It would never have occurred to any of us to vandalize the statue or fountain. (Although I have witnessed the statue being groped.)
The hand prints left behind however, were invisible.
Taggers always think their stuff is more important than others.
Seems most folks have fogotten the sacrifices of WW I and WW II. You will note that June 6th the anniversary of the D-Day Invastion of Normandy, beginning of the end for Hitler, was hardly recognized this year. I guess after the vets die off the memory gets dim.
Overstreet, I think you hit the nail on the head. These disgusting idiots must have failed history or more likely skipped those classes. They certainly would never think of tagging the Veterans Memorial wall.
Rednecks.
Idiots
That is awful.
What no picture?
This is what happens when parents don't discipline children. Kids grow up with entitlement issues and no respect for authority or others. They're immature and think that it would be 'cool' to vandalize a public monument because they have no concept of why the monument even exists. No respect for the men who served. Graffiti done well and within the confines of the law is art, this is not. This is filth defacing a beautiful monument. I hope these kids are somehow punished.
A few well placed cameras would help with this.

CCTV is tough subject around here.
If I was a JSO, the first people I would interview would be posters on the T-U and FCN websites.
I was wondering why no pictures as well. I went this morning to take a look and the City had already pressure washed most of it and it wouldn't have been legible in a picture. Hopefully it will come off completely. It was less extensive than I had feared, mostly 1 panel of the outside wall of the fountain and a small portion of the river wall.
some of the symbols looked like they were thought up and painted by a 6 year old. i honestly wouldn't even call this graffiti- more or less scribblings and nonsensical references to the President.
But honestly, what do we expect when hate speech masquerades as "news" in the mainstream media. Thank you Fox! Of course the slow children are going to cling to this sort of drivel.

Pic included.
They need to put cameras in the park to deter this sort of action
Just clean it up and move on.

I doubt that will do much to keep vandals from doing such stuff.

I love the spelling of president.
If they had cameras I think people would be less likely to dwell.

got the $ to install them?
Seriously? Kill the president? Too bad this guy wasn't caught on camera so he could be added to a watch list. Sounds like he has the intellect of a red neck high schooler. That limits the potential suspects to about 100,000.

True, my mistake. The Prezident should be shaking in his boots, whoever he is.
Some dumb azz. What happened to the mural in 5-Points on Lomax Street at Park Street? (The one with Marilyn Monroe, etc. outside Fans and Stoves) It is painted over an is now tagged?
I found the answer to my question. Here is the new mural. I saw it in the beggining stages. It looks better now. The old one has a special place in my heart though. hehe.

That is art! I haven't seen that mural yet, but I plan to stop by after work to check it out.
beautiful !
Shaun's work is fantastic. I miss the Milo picture that was painted over by the overpriced thrift store at the north end of the 5 pts theatre building. If you look hard enough you can see him under 1 cheap coat of red paint.
I love the ShantyTown and Lomax lounge murals!
I hafta admit, I get that it was a vile act and all, but that "The World is Yours" tagging a lil' while ago was kinda funny. It kinda remind me of those "Zombies Ahead!" electronic construction sign pranks; I know I'm demented.
