Have you seen this?
http://www.jacksonvilleconfidential.com/2010/06/rasta-tree-update.html
It's ugly, burn the paint off.
I think this is a rental. If so, I wonder what the landlord is going to think of this update. ::)
The historic district regulations don't cover paint color.
And RAP doesn't really have any enforcement power anyway.
I think all they can do is ask the owner not to do that.
Hah! They painted a lion on it, too! Honestly it's ugly.. but hey.. I guess you could say that it adds to the "artistic charm" of Dellhood.
Jah mon! I got inspired!
QuoteO Rasta Tree, O Rasta Tree,
Your painted trunk delight us.
They're green/yellow/red when summer days are bright;â€"
They're green/yellow/red like winter snow is not.
O, Rasta Tree, O Rasta Tree,
Your painted trunk delight us!
O Rasta Tree, O Rasta Tree,
You give us so much pleasure!
How oft at Rasta tide the sight,
O green palm tree, gives us delight!
O Rasta Tree, O Rasta Tree,
You give us so much pleasure!
Oh Rasta tree, Oh Rasta tree
Who painted you that colour?
Your trunk so gross in summertime
Please burn you down by wintertime.
Oh Rasta tree, Oh Rasta tree
Forever true your colour.
Oh Rasta tree, Oh Rasta tree
You fill my heart with rasta beats.
Reminding me on Rasta Day
To think of you and then be gay.
Oh Rasta tree, Oh Rasta tree
You fill my lungs with pot smoke.
Where on Dellwood is this? Thats my street and I don't recall ever seeing it.
Just happened in the last day or two. It's two houses south of the orange house.
Thought the house with the tree was vacant?
It's located near the Riverside Park side of Dellwood... not sure what the cross street is.
I thought it was vacant too, but noticed a nice rasta flag was added to the porch the other day.
There is a senior Marine Corps officer living next door. This could be interesting.
The cross-street is Copeland.
2145 Dellwood Ave
Owner Audi G Bajalia who does not live at this address
I drive right by here on my way home every day. Guess I'll have to look a little harder tonite.
Is this house hoping to get drug raided or something??
jbroadglide - yeah there may be more artwork added... The lion popped over overnight it seemed.
Well, the tree has been painted over to the relief of everyone in the neighborhood. There is now a large Rastifari flag hanging from the edge of the porch.
Nothing like advertising that you have some of the sacred weed inside. I and I think that this is foolish showing off fellows.
I'm pretty sure it is meant to be a representation of the Cameroon national flag in support of that nation playing in World Cup 2010 in South Africa. But I'm glad to see racial stereotypes are alive and well in the 'liberal, open-minded' readership of Metro Jacksonville.com...lol!
I might just go out tonight and paint one of my trees red, white and blue and the other tree with the Cross of St. George in support of the USA and England in the World Cup just for the joy of irritating some of the people on this board. Maybe they'll just suspect I'm outsourcing jobs and selling tea! LOL! :-)
Nope, that is the Rastifari flag. The crowned lion is the symbol of Halie Selassie, the last Emperor of Ethiopia who is regarded as the second coming of Christ by the believers in Rastifari.
Nothing racial about my comments. Rastafari is no more or less strange than any other religious sect and promotes a healthy and respectable lifestyle. No alcohol, no meat, great music and a tolerance of other faiths and paths to enlightenment and opposition to all forms of oppression
They use cannabis instead of wine as a sacrament which gets them in trouble with law enforcement authorities. Stupid of the authorities, but not wise to advertise in my opinion.
The neighborhood's objection isn't to Rastifari, but to painting trees. Thought that was clear, but guess not.
Painting trees is graffiti. Just hang a flag to support your team.
The Cameroon National Football team is called the Lions, hence the head of a lion. Jeez... this is why some people think there was a shooter behind the grassy knoll.
"Painting trees is graffiti." Mmmm, maybe. Not sure this particular case would survive a first amendment argument in front of the Supreme Court.
I'll go back and take a picture of the flag to post so that you can compare it with the Wikipedia entries.
Now if someone will just PM me with directions on how to post a picture! LOL!

Especially since it is a religious expression, not the symbol of a football team! ROFLMAO!
When is Cameroon playing anyway?
The Cameroon national flag has a star on it, not a lion. Not trying to fight you here, but you're trying to stretch facts just as much as your opposition to prove your point.
Cameroon is playing Japan right now on ESPN, hence the timing of the appearance of the flag. The tree was painted on private property so it is probably protected by the first amendment. For example, I could NOT paint my trees because they are in the public right-of-way and technically owned by the City of Jacksonville so the City/RAP have a right to police those trees.
Perhaps the readers on MetroJacksonville.com would be better served by educating themselves about "the beautiful game" rather than drug culture symbolism...lol!

Do I have to repeat myself? The Cameroon national team are called "THE LIONS". The Indomitable Lions, to be exact but I'm not aware of any artistic expression for the word "indomitable".
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameroon_national_football_team
The lengths people will go to in stretching reality to prove they are not engaging in racial stereotypes is ridiculous. You guys did, it was a mistake, get over it and do better in the future. :-)
Yes, it is just a HUGE coincidence that the World Cup started this week, that Cameroon is playing today, that they are called the LIONS, and a flag appears on a tree in Riverside in the Cameroon colors with a lion head. Give me a break.
^ I liked the painted tree too, it was just a bit of an unflattering choice of subject matter. I like art work on houses and in yards. It adds character to homes and neighborhoods. My favorite are the prayer flags (the Everest looking flags) that people string across porches. I think those are beautiful.
That said, being that this was in a historic district, and that the subject matter could easily be misinterpreted (as evidenced by this thread), this art needed to be removed.
This tree actually received numerous complaints to the city in various departments. As I understand the owner of the property has painted or is planning to paint over the artwork on the tree.
The tree has been painted over with a brown that matches the rest of the tree.
When I was a kid there was a fashion for painting tree trunks white up to about head height. Anybody else remember that or why it was done?
Half the houses in Riverside have flags of some sort on them. Some people change them with the season. We love our front porches and decorate them a lot.
The house that had the painted tree also has some very attractive clear glass vases on the porch rails that add a nice sparkle to the place.
Here's the flag on the house on Dellwood Ave.

Argument ended I trust.
BRAVO, Dogwalker, Bravo! ;D
Did anyone even consider, knocking on the door and asking? If that is not something done easily, than maybe the neighbor could do so?
Well, apparently the city sent him a letter telling him to take the paint off. At least that's what Jaxcon says.
No one answered the door when I took the picture above.
There are several people from Ethiopia and Somalia who live or work in Riverside. We might be down to only a dozen languages spoken in old Riverside since the French-Canadian guy on Ernest has moved out.
Racial stereotypes? I guess I'm not "enlightened" enough to spot them.
I love the World Cup fanaticism, but Riverside should not be sullied by hideous graffiti. (even Dellwood Ave.)
great! Tree graffiti ! :D

I am pretty sure not every reader of metro jacksonville.com is "open-minded" or "liberal", let alone both...
racial stereotypes? what is racist about equating a rastafari flag with....uh...rastafarians?
