On my way to work this morning, I saw Poor Penny Carson on University Blvd, across the street from Town & Country, just before the Matthews Bridge Expressway. Quite an interested and colorful character.
I don't know how many of you have heard of Poor Penny Carson. Apparently he is an itinerate street preacher who walks from state to state with ventriloquist dummy in his arms and a sign on his back. The dummy, "Sweat Pea Carson," does the preaching. I probably don't agree with everything he preaches, but I think it's kind of cool that (a) he travels around with the dummy, and (b) he once called Ronald Reagan "the beast."
You can find news stories about him, and even videos, you search Poor Penny Carson on the internet. I would place a link here, but there are too many to choose from and my computer is going slow for some reason.
I saw him down in Orange Park about a month or so ago and he was also up at Blanding and 103rd a couple of weeks after that. When I saw him in Orange Park I couldnt figure out how a little 6 year old boy was being so still while on the back of the man. It wasnt until I saw him again at Blanding and 103rd that I realized it was a dummy...I felt like a dummy lol.
He must be working his way around town.
I saw him on Beach Blvd (can't remember the intersection, but was closer to the beach than downtown) a few weeks ago in the north bound median holding conversation with his dummy. I had no idea who he was, but was quite entertained by him while waiting for the light to change.

THAT'S where I saw him... I was waiting for the light on Blanding going south there and saw him walking back and forth on the right. OK, so his eccentricity isn't just locally known.
I'll have to keep a lookout now and ask for his picture next time.
He's been at Hodges and Beach on and off for well over a month now. And yes, he's still preaching that Reagan was the antichrist.
You can enjoy his diatribe in Hemming Plaza each day if you enjoy that sort of thing. Waste of good air as far as I am concerned.

I saw him last night on Beach and Hodges. I just assumed he was one of those human billboards advertising condos or something.

I know! Hahaha, Buckethead, I was thinking the same thing. It seems Poor Penny is stuck in the 80s.

Birdman! Heck, Ock and I remember the Trainman. He would trot around downtown Jacksonville towing a string of cardboard boxes and making steam train noises and whistles. At night he would wave a flashlight in front of himself, too. He always gave the proper horn signals when he crossed an intersection.
Birdman ended up in Atlanta.
The morning after the big Snowjam surprise storm in the early 80's, he was the first person I saw out on Peachtree,riding his bike and flapping his arms.
This guy doesn't even hold a candle to the homeless people in S Miami beach that keep constricting snakes as pets, sitting in their bicycle baskets!
Quite an interesting way to get "tips" for allowing people to handle your portable petting zoo.
I just saw him for the first time a couple of hours ago. I saw the PoorPennyCarson.com sign first then the strange man with the dummy on the corner. This was at the intersection right before Orange Park Mall. (Wells & Blanding). It's interesting the people that come through. Sometimes I want to sit with them and hear their story...but I gotta stay safe, you know?
I saw him on the corner of Atlantic and Southside. Like an earlier post, I also thought that he was lugging a child around. Upon closer inspection, I also proved myself to be a dummy, too : )
Seen him at Normandy and Lane from time to time
He was at Blanding and Youngerman on Sunday.
