I know there have been countless posts on this, but all seem to stray into the realm on Mojo's, Bono's, and Woody's....
I want to know what the best hometown BBQ....that isn't one of the above three...
So, what is it?
I hear Jerome Brown's is good.
I want something as good as I've had in Kansas City/St. Louis/North Carolina, et al.
I know, i know....tough order.
I had Shane's Rib Co the other day, quite delicious.
Personal favorites are Jenkins and Mojos, but I haven't had any of the title restaurants.
Bulls BBQ (Baymeadows Rs), Cattlemans (Atlantic Blvd), The Pig (Normandy Blvd), Monroes (Highway Ave), Blackjacks (San Juan) all good places. Got to remember this isnt KC or the Carolinas...Our BBQ is a little different, namely because of the mustard based sauce....ummm I am getting hungry!
If you are in Atlanta, check out Fox Brothers and DBA.
Anyone try Checkers over on Emerson?
Can people include locations or at least parts of town for their nominations?? I'm getting hungry and my lunch break is coming up!

+1
i edited mine to include locations. Now I want some BBQ for lunch!
I've seen this question posted a few times, with no response:
Does Jerome Brown's still have their buffet at lunch?
That may be a deciding factor!

Im a purist of southern bbq, over the years those two are the best, and in that order!
Cottens has always been good -- I haven't been in a long time (I need to do that soon). I've notice it got a bit o' lipstick put on it and is lookin' good.

Unfortunately Blackjacks closed. They should have stuck with their small operation on Shirley Ave. They got bigger, started using gas and the quality fell apart.
Mojo's ribs are GREAT!
thanks for sharing, i didnt know they closed. Still many good options on the westside though.
That's it. I'm working tonight and tomorrow night I'm hauling my butt to Jenkins and getting myself a slab- I can't take all this bbq talk anymore.
Mojo's is coming to Avondale - yee haw!!
Details please!
Treemendous bbq out on Herlong has some good ribs, not quite as good as jenkins.

yess bulls bar b que is great! they just close to early and arent open on the weekends. I just moved to the baymeadows and I hit their lunch buffet. I hadnt ate there in like 8 years. Jenkins is still good, but they are just a little pricey. So I dont go very often.

If the Laura Trio news wasn't today, this would be the best news I've heard in a while!!!!!!!!!!! Where, when, etc!!!???
The Pig is *hooorrrrriiible* ugh any of their locations. As far as I'm concerned if you want the real deal, it's Fred Cotten's or Jenkins. Bono's (only the Beach Blvd Location) is my close second.
Mojo's in Avondale ~ in the former space the furniture store Nadeau vacated
No projected opening date as of yet
Fantastic News. Thanks for the info. My family was pretty upset when Nadeau left, but this will help ease the pain. The Avondale strip is really turning into a great area. More feasible (read: affordable) dining options and nighttime entertainment than San Marco and with more neighborhood charm than 5 pts. Anyone been to Elevated Avondale yet?

Not to throw this thread off topic. But Sunday brunch at Blue Tuna is awesome. 4 dollar unlimited mimosas? YES PLS!
Will be nice to see Mojo there.
Wow - that's exciting - as if parking wasn't tight already......
I like Monroe's Smoke house on Highway ave.

The last time I went to Jenkins the lady behind the counter asked to take my order. To everything I ordered off the menu, she promptly told me they were out of it (this was literally everything, but the rib sandwich). The task would have been a lot easier if, when I stepped up to order, she would have told me all they had at the moment was the rib sandwich (would have saved an extra 10 â€" 15 minutes). So of course I had to order the rib sandwich, not realizing it would actually be a slab of ribs between many slices of bread. I must say this is a very difficult item to eat, and you definitely can not eat it like a sandwich. Basically the bread is there to attempt to keep you from getting your hands covered in sauce while you eat the ribs, which didn’t work very well.
Is it really a sandwich if you can't eat it like one? How about they change that item to, Ribs with a side of bread?
^ i must say this was an amusing lunch.

Son, your not from around here are you! 8)
I used to work in the old JEA building opposite the Ambassador, use to walk over to jenkins for lunch. Went in around 10:45 one day. Ordered a rib sandwich, lady walks out from the back, she yelled at the clerk who ordered the rib sandwich. Heard another yell, its the white guy out front. It did single me out of the crowd LOL ;D
JeffreyS has good taste! Monroe's on Highway Ave. (where the old Pat and Mike's used to be) is about the best in the city.
Jenkin's though? I used to work downtown not far from there and would go by once in a while. It's not all that. You could see pallet wood being used when they ran out of oak so...nope, think I'll pass on the attitude and go where I'm welcomed
I'll have to check out Monroe's. Used to go to school with Pat and Mike's grandson and used to go to their house on the Cedar River for pool parties. Real solid people.
Yeah, BlackJack's closed. The building has been renovated and is for lease now. I have to be honest, the old KC BBQ beat the snot out of BlackJack's.
BlackJacks were at their prime several years back. They lost their quality each time they expanded and moved. KC was great back in the day.
Though this is not a restaurant, it has some of the best smoked meats I have ever had. They also have some great bottled sauces. Right now, my favorite is a blackberry wine bbq sauce.

The sauce soaked bread is the best part. It is definately difficult to eat so you should only eat at home because you would not want to make a mess a work! LOL
^^oh yes it is!!! i love it....sauce on everything. so good.
