Ah yes, anyone remember the old Panama City Seafood restaraunt? Best potato patties in town back then. Saw 2001 at the old main street drive in.
One of my favorite neighborhoods in all of Jax, it is salty and authentic and utterly charming without any orchestrated effort.
Wow the old bridge looks almost exactly like the Ortega Bridge. Nice neighborhood tour.
Thanks, Lake. Another great article
OMG!! I was born and raised in Panama park! My parents still stay there. Still a very quiet area with the exception of 63rd street. That is drug alley. I was raised on 55th street and I also went to Lola M Culver. I was very said to see the school close. :(
It sure help us (new comers) learn more about Jax original neighborhoods.
Panama Park is a great neighborhood except for 63rd st as duvaldude08 mentioned. I particularly love the bungalows on huge lots along the south end of Oakwood. I'm still kicking myself for not buying that gem of a home on a 1.5 ac lot for $50k just a couple years ago. If JSO would make a concerted effort to clean up the dealing & hooking going on along 63rd st, it would be huge for the entire neighborhood.

I wish they would as well. growing up in this area and walking home from Lola M Culver, 63rd has always been a hot bed for drugs, robberys, etc. I can remember that store over there being robbed several times growing up as a child and my mom told us not to ever go in there. We were even forbidden to go to the park alone because of the drug activity that takes places. Luckily, this activity has not ruin the entire area.
As a kid I remember going to see Beatles movies (Help! and A Hard Days Night) and Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello beach movies at the Main St. drive-in in the sixties.
I grew up in the 60's off Buffalo Ave. We could ride up and down the streets on our bikes til dark then and walk the couple miles to Culver without fear. Everybody knew everybody. I will always cherish those memories.
Where was the Main Street drive-in?
Meaning, where on Main?
Where the Food Lion shopping center is today, at 48th & Main.
Joseph's has some great pizza. A little jewel of the northside!
billy: The Main Street Drive-In driveway was to the right of the old Kenney Shoe store. I think it is a rent-a-center now.
Ahhh I remember Kenney shoe store. My parents spent alot of money in there when I was a child LOL
I found a neat little website called www.panamapark.com. The thing I found interesting was the restrictions. ONe of them were, " no lot shall be conveyed to a colored or negro person." being that Im black and was raised in Panama Park I find that part VERY interesting :o
