The new interchange at MLK/21st St was proposed to serve the growing port business...but with their focus moved up to the Dames Point area, the new interchange may never happen.....which makes it even more frustrating that land was purchased and buildings demolished.
Evergreen is an amazing cemetery with lots of "Old South" character. If you want to savor what Jax's landscape may have been like a hundred plus years ago, this is a good place to start. I believe it may be the largest cemetery in Jax (exclusive of the recently opened National Cemetery on the Northside which might give it a run for the money in land area although Evergreen has a 130 head start of internments). Having a slow moving train come through the rail line running through the middle of Evergreen during a funeral service is always a unique experience. :D
Great Article! I grew up in Panama Park and my parents still reside there. Very quiet area. (with the exception of 63rd street. That is drug Alley) Went to longbranch for summer camp as a child.
