Yes it is going to the Avenues Mall.
No one knows the answer except little birds.

Pesky birds... sometimes they can be misinformed though. Do we know for a fact that it's going to the Avenues Mall?
Yep, come on down Macy's... we don't remember shit!
COHEN BROTHERS DEPARTMENT STORE.... Largest store in Florida, since 1867... Location? St. James Building, Jacksonville.
MAY COMPANY, bought into Cohen Brothers in 1959 and relaunched it as MAY-COHENS
By 1980 the name was just MAY COMPANY, and the downtown store had gone from flagship of the whole chain to barely a lifeboat.
Store pulled out of downtown and the St. James building was empty for the first time since 1901.
Orange Park and Regency Stores were struggling now that "MAY" had converted one of the last of the "COMPLETE" department stores, with everything from Basketballs, to Books, Bookcases to Bath Robes, Menswear to Monkey Wrenches, or Bra's to Bassoons, into just another clothier. Oh remember why they bought out Cohens? They wanted Cohens as the best way to enter the deep south because, "Cohens does everything right!"
Perhaps this is what happens when a general store from Leadville, a Silver Camp in the nose bleed altitudes of Colorado buys out a sub tropical icon.
Then along in 2005, Federated Department Stores enter the picture, and MAY along with the ruins of Cohen's and their newest acquisition MARSHALL FIELDS AND COMPANY, got sucked into a vacuum called MACY'S of New York, NY.
Ahh, by then Jacksonville was just a faint memory and their were greener pastures in Orlando, Millennium, Florida Mall and a dozen other "more desirable" locations.
Suddenly with the economy in the tank, rumors are rife that MACY'S is coming to Jacksonville!
Well a big freaking whoopee do', I'm so excited I could just puke.
OCKLAWAHA
Macy's commercials have been airing in our market for years. I have said this before. If the Macy's is the quality of those in Gainesville and Daytona, no thanks. Orlando and Atlanta quality, I would welcome.
Macy's at the Lenox Mall in Atlanta is not as nice as the Dillard's at the St. John's Town Center. I love Macy's and have their credit card, but we are not missing out by not having any. Belk can even be nicer than Macy's sometimes. I think Jacksonville needs to work on getting a next tier department store like Bloomie's or Nordstrom. Neiman's and Saks are definitely out of the question here.
Agreed - While I am a bit starstruck by the brand, I feel like it could simply be more of the same compared to Dillard's and/or Belk, really. I thought that Parisian provided for some "notch above" alternatives, but Nordstrom could hit it out of the park here I believe. Unless they bring the Thanksgiving Day parade with them, I really think that the perceived luster could wear off quickly. That said, I still kinda hope they come to town to keep the other two in check........
The glory days of Macy's have gone...they are nowhere near the quality they used to be. I've shopped at them in DC, the Tidewater area and was never that impressed.
I think the two biggest stores that people want here are Macy's and Ikea. I hear this all the time. unfortunately, Ikea only opens stores in markets of 2 million or more. Macy's.. I have no ideaa why they have never opened a SJTC or Avenues location.

i agree. I was in NYC a few weeks ago and the wife and I visited the "largest department store in the world" flagship Macy's in Herald Square. Wasn't impressed at all.
I sure do miss the days when we use the go to Riches in down town Atlanta at Christmas time. Now that was a shopping experience. They would set up the pink pig roller coaster on the roof for the kids. The thing I remember the most is they had a coin department where you could purchase old coins. I still have a few that I received as Christmas presents as a kid.
BTW Riches was purchased by Macy's
I am in Orlando right now and they have that Nordstrom store here, right next to their Macys...this place is too far for Jax folks to shop at.

I though the one in Orlando was sub-par too.... :-\

I just left Orlando and the Macys there is ok, Nordstroms has some really nice junk.

Belk's potential sale stirs Macy's rumors.

I would suggest Belk and Macy's are about the same...besides some of the original Macy stores like Herald Square in NYC, their brand isn't what it used to be. I mean a Macy's in Ocala and Gainesville...come on...how does that make it so exclusive.
^^^I agree. I've said countless times before the Macy's that matters is in Manhattan.
Those are old Maas Brothers/ Burdines stores that became Macy's through mergers. If May-Cohens stayed with May, Jax's Belks would have eventually become Macy's.
Quotecome on...how does that make it so exclusive.
I think what's exclusive is the
omission of Macy's in our area - seems like a no-brainer, especially when you consider that some level of advertising budget/money has been spent locally for the better part of a decade.
I personally think that a Macy's @ Roosevelt would be pretty cool instead of the stripped down Belk.
Macy's local competitor would be either:
Dillard's in the mid tier or Nordstrom at the high tier. Belk may be similar in some product lines but they dont compete in size anymore as they pare down the square footage.
So if they build a store like Gainesville and Ocala, they will compete with Dilliards. If they build a store like Millenium Mall then they are competing against Nordstrom.
I just dont think Jacksonville has enough large dollar to support more high end general retail. Its not just the high earners, its the number of them and how much they dispose of it.
I think there is less room at mid tier because it is crowded with Dilliards and to a lesser degree Belk.
So if Macys is going to come....it would have to be at the expense of someone else.
