It's because all the Poles went to Great Britain to become plumbers.
It's amazing how since the economic crash began, the developed countries are now looking like third world countries, and the third world countries are on the rise to better fortunes. What goes around comes around.

I'm not going to lie, this thread got my hopes up.
That part of East Germany was badly underdeveloped and under educated when it was under the Communist government. It does not have the advantage of the mittelstadt (middle sized) companies that West Germany has where the unemployment rate is less than 10% and there is a long experience with technical education. Takes a long time to build up a modern manufacturing infrastructure.
Poland has had a great success in the past twenty years as a European agricultural producer. I'll bet that a lot of the jobs that the East Germans are going over the border for are food processing jobs.
