Title: JU in NIT tonight
Post by: Dapperdan on March 16, 2010, 11:08:39 AM
If you are up late, try to watch JU at 11PM tonight as they take on Arizona State. it is on ESPN2, or if you re like me and do not have expanded cable, I believe you can watch it on espn.com with their streaming service. They may actually have a shot at winning this game, and if so, it would be huge for them. I know they wanted to go to the NCAA tournament, but they would have been slaughtered in the first round as they would have been matched up with Kentucky, which is what the A -Sun champs East Tennessee have to deal with. This game is more manageable and winnable.
JU and UNF live in the shadow of UF and it is a shame as it shows on the news. If they say anything about JU or UNF, it is when they are out of time or at the very end. They need our support. That is my 2 cents.

I will be recording the game and watching in the morning. Coach Warren has done a great job at JU considering the state of the program when he got there. I also get the feeling that Coach Driscoll at UNF is starting to awake a sleeping giant. UNF is going to surpass JU soon in terms of their basketball program.

Man, waking up was SO hard this morning... but WELL worth it.
Went to the NIT game in Gainesville last year and you could tell the team was just intimidated.

Not last night.  When you saw Will Alston trapping ASU's point guard at half court on the first posession of the game, you knew it was going to be a much different effort this year.  ASU has got to be the worst rebouding team I have EVER seen, and I thought JU was going to get outmuscled against a much bigger team.  Boy, was I wrong!!!

Losing Marcus Allen to graduation and Aric Brooks with a transfer left a huge hole in the middle this year.  Just imagine what this year's team could have done with a Tim Borroughs or Artemus McClary bouncing around down low!!!  Having Shaquille Johson sign with this year's squad would have been huge!  This could have been a team that made it to and won a game in the NCAA's with a talent like that paired up with Ben Smith.
Really hope local Chris Rozier develops next year... he'll be sorely needed!

Can't WAIT for Monday!!!  Chicago Pizza at the Landing, come join me!!

Fieldafm, I think they play again on Thursday, not Monday. Do the local sports bars even put the game on? I have found this city, especially the news stations love to bury the team and only mention them at the very end, if at all.

ESPN has a nice article about the game. Much nicer in fact than the local news sites.

Oh wow, it is Monday. I wonder why so late? Do you know where the game will be played?

Duh, it has to be Gators first,
then a small byline about FSU or UGA
Then a tiny mention about UM/USF/UCF
Then they finally save space for JU and UNF.

Tell me about it!!!!
5 articles about Florida in today's paper... One and a Gene Frenette column on JU.  I know its a late game and all, but c'mon!!
FSU and Virginia had a huge series this weekend in baseball(two top 5 teams) but you really had to scope out the TU for any mention of that series.
Did you know JU football already kicked off spring practice??  No, but I could tell you what color John Brantley's socks were by reading the Times Union sports section.

Anyway, off the soapbox.

Game is Monday at Texas Tech.  Really, there really isnt an official gathering spot.  Mudville used to host the Kerwin Bell show and that's now done at Chicago Pizza at the Landing.
But, just about any sports bar will show the game if you ask them.  It will be on either ESPN or ESPN2.

Chicago Pizza in beautiful dowtown is just the place to be(you could even print a coupon for half off pizza for Monday night)  :)  Pizza and Bold City on the river while JU basetball is on... doesn't get much better than that!

Ok, now the NIT Tournament site shows a schedule of 3/20 (Saturday) for JU Versus Texas Tech.
No times yet, the UNC versus Miss St game is at noon on ESPN.

trying to find a time for this game. Will post when I do.

I keep hearing Monday... you have to remember, the JU athletic department is hosting the NCAA tournament through Saturday.  It is my understanding that the NIT is trying to work around this accomodation.

Texas Tech will be hosting this game. I hope the school knows in time what day their game is, this is kinda confusing.

All the athletic department is working the tourney this weekend.  Its kind of hard logistically to move your basketball team around on the same day you have your athletic department hosting 16 schools and 10,000+ people.

I think Monday is great.  Its spring break this week so it gives the players plenty of time to focus on Tech.  Tech is a very strong team.  They match up very well to our young men.  JU needs as much preparation time as they can get.

That would make sense as this seems to be so up in the air as far as time goes.

The game is Saturday, but apparently won't be televised?? WTF??? This is from JU's website:

JU to face Texas Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The JU men’s basketball team will be making its second trip west this week for its NIT second round matchup against Texas Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The game will not be televised, but fans can catch the JU Sports Network broadcast with Barry Milligan and Artis Gilmore, with the Bono’s Barbecue Pregame Show airing at 2:45 p.m.

surprised its on Saturday...but that explains the no TV thing....the NCAA (which now runs the NIT) doesn't want competition for the men's and women's tourneys.

They are showing UNC/Miss St in NIT @ noon, but no JU/TTU.

Then do the game on Monday. This is disappointing. I guess we will have to listen to Barry Mulligan, which is not a bad thing, but no TV is terrible.

They might not have gotten the same seeding, but you're right. Probably an unwinnable game.

That's odd to me. What if they had made the tourney. Then they'd definitely be hosting while their team was somewhere else in the country...

Definitely happy for the Dolphins. Too bad the game won't be televised...but if they can get through, the next one will be.

I still steamed at the NCAA. JU Athletic dept is helping with the NCAA tourney in JAX.
NCAA runs the NIT as well.

So how do they thank JU?
First game the worse TV time for JU's home city.
Second game no TV time.

The guys played hard and lost, but of course no one saw them.

GFY NCAA. I fully expect Kerry Romesberg to complain loudly to the NCAA for giving them the screw job.

Not only did they lose, but they had the refs against them all day and still had a chance to win. bad refs, no TV.. terrible.
