What would you like to go out and see?
As we plan for our next season I would like to ask for suggestions from Jax theatregoers as to what you would like to attend?
Look at the Bucket List interview here on MJ I think the Mayor is strongly behind the movement and understands its value to overall revitalization.
But what productions would you like to see???
There are suggestions coming in on my email directly but I would love to hear from you here about shows/ concerts/ events that you would like to see in Jax in the very near future...
I saw this show in Tiajuana once... the vagazzaling monologues.
I’ll bite. I used to see a lot of shows when I lived in NY. I have always been drawn to smaller, quirkier comedies/dramas like Taller then a Dwarf, Moon Over Buffalo, etc. rather then the larger scale shows like Phantom, Sunset Blvd, 42nd Street.
Character Driven; not flashy but well acted.

Thanks that's what I was hoping to hear....
more please...
I'm not much of a theatre person, but I'd like to be; Shakespeare, Rent, and Death of a Salesman and the like are all I know, and that kind of stuff I wouldn't want to see all the time.
I know theatre is much, much deeper than that, I just haven't been exposed to it.
So I guess I'd say contemporary comedies and dramas, not too preachy or too abstract...subro's "character-driven" opinion is right on the money because it makes almost anything watchable, IMHO.
devlinmann, I really appreciate how fired up you are about all this. Best of luck to ya, sir. :)
kells904 thanks to you as well, this input is very helpful to us!!
We do have a Shakespeare on tap, but not like any you have seen before....
ans we are considering three different contemporary comedies, based on the comments so far I will focus my search on the more character driven pieces , hell that's welcome they are less expensive...
more please! this is really helping...

that is a huge show and very expensive to produce, if we were to undertake it , it would have to be in conjunctions with a larger tour and several other supporting venues, that said I do love that show!
and now for venue...
what is the best place to see a show downtown?
where would you like to see a professional company take up residence?
I keep hearing that the Florida Theater is under utilized, perhaps at least something could be done there. Also, why not look at some of the older warehouses in the Springfield Historic District…perhaps one could be made available very inexpensively and could be set-up without much outlay.
I remember something called the Kenley Players from when I was a Kid. Seems like they brought in one or two big stars and the rest were local. I don’t know if that is done anymore. (looked it up, ended in 1995) Back then, I remember packed houses. I got to talk to Connie Stevens in the parking lot before the show...I was twelve and still remember it. I also remember getting Juliet Prowse to sign her picture...she was going to sign the back one but I had her sign the one inside that showed off her legs...got a laugh from her...I was 14 after all.
I guess my only point is that theater can make a lasting impression and I miss going on a regular basis.

Theatre does have that power and we fully intend to make it even more available!
Hey Cuz, how about The Wiz? Daughter of a Pacifist Soldier (2002)? or Bastards of Bataan? or something on the poetry of General Homma of The Imperial Japanese Army. Conqueror of the Philippines, General Homma was the consummate reluctant soldier. Got to think how interesting his story would be.

Are there any existing works on these subjects or are you suggesting the development of a new work, because we love to develop new work and that does sound like ripe material....
keep the ideas coming please! this is great!

Depends upon the size and type. Florida Theater, TUPAC(600 seat Terry Theater, 3,000 seat Moran theater, 1800 seat Jacoby Hall), and the Ritz Theater are all downtown venues that are not full up. In fact the Ritz is painfully empty and was built for other reasons than the need for seats.
Just what are you asking? Are you wanting to start another small theater and company? ...or use existing facilities?
Thanks for your input. We are actually an established Theatre Company in search of a new home.
We have produced and shown work in NY, LA, London, France, Berlin, and here and we plan to continue this year with a range of productions which vary greatly in scope.
A residency at one of the venues you mentioned would be ideal as we also provide year round actor training and special events.
If you are interested please have a look at out website http://www.thebacklighttheatregroup.org
and let me know what you think
thanks again

It's a mixed bag, General Homma, IJA, was a poet of some fame before the war, the book was by his daughter. On the one side we see a man of almost mystical oriental peace, and on the other hand the monster responsible for the Bataan death march. In his defense it was said he had no idea that the inhumane treatment was going on, and frankly one of the reasons Japan lost the war was the autonomous decisions that individual units could and did make. This left commanders to point to an objective and the soldiers to decide how to take it. Yet the ultimate decision and responsibility falls on the General, he was scheduled to be hung after his war crimes trial. His family made impassioned plea's to Mc Arthur for his life, but the haughty American leader mocked them. Finally the judges decided to "honor" him by allowing a firing squad execution rather then a rope.
So it would be a new work of considerable twists and hooks.

what sort of space are you specifically looking for, what do you need to set up shop?
Yeah, one of the existing venues would be the way to go and I am glad Devlin and his theatre company are seemingly committing or leaning to the urban core. This would be a shot in the arm for Jacksonville. I would choose, if I was Devlin, either the Florida Theatre or the Ritz.

We need a wide arrary of space to make everything available that will are capable of providing, i.e. theatre, dance, filmmaking, classes, lectures, workshops, production, editing, etc...
We are ready to set up shop right away, very few staff until productions begin then revolving staff etc...
Our NY group is in development on two projects and our London group is negotiating contracts for our next Shakespeare production, again I hate the way this sounds but it will feature names you will know and we want it to premiere here before being presented in NY, LA, London, and France

Definitely want the urban core and an established venue, and thank you for welcoming us...

The Ritz, while gorgeous lacks the necessary extra spaces need to provide the full range of the offerings I mentioned above.
The Times Union Center is great and I have worked there before, (
Hamlet 2000)but the stage lacks certain capacities and the Symphony and the Artist Series have complete run of the rest of needed extra spaces. They should they are wonderful assets to the community! I had the great pleasure of working with Fabio Mechetti on a performance doing Shakespeare soliloquies while the symphony played music written for or inspired by Shakespeare and it was tremendous fun!!
The Florida Theatre , on the the other hand is very interesting, I will have to look into it and get back to you.
congrats to my friend S he just went 4 for 5 in pilot season!
Open call to local writers...
We are formally seeking new works by local writers for workshop and possible production.
Email devlindirector@mac.com for details.
Thank you
