- by November - Break out the cheese! Exciting, but I'm still gonna miss those Indians that I posed with in countless pictures in front of Teepee Town :-\..............Man, I am a sucker for tourist traps!

QuotePirate Soul Museum relocating to St. Augustine

The pirates are coming.
The Pirate Soul Museum, which has been in Key West since 2004, is moving to St. Augustine. Work has already begun on the building that used to house Teepee Town and the Christmas Shop, right across Florida A1A from Castillo de San Marcos.
Pat Croce, museum owner and former owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, said he’s aiming to be open by Nov. 1. (“With a ribbon slashing,†he said.)
“Families and kids love the museum,†Croce said, “but there’s just not enough of them in Key West. It’s a long drive down there.
“If I’m going to be someplace else,†he said, “I’d want it to be a place that honors its history and heritage. On top of that, it’s been attacked by pirates.â€
Croce said he’s been collecting pirate bounty for three decades and that museum is a mix of his 500 authentic items and interactive exhibits.
There are only two original Jolly Roger flags, he said, and he owns one of them. He has Capt. Kidd’s 1699 journal for his last voyage and the first wanted poster for a pirate: 500 pounds silver for the head of Henry Every.
The interactive exhibits, some of which are being built by Disney, include loading and firing a cannon and ship’s deck that rocks with the movement of the captain wheel.
Below deck, he said, the candles go out “And you experience Blackbeard’s death. You swear you’re going to get your own throat cut.â€
Admission charges for the Key West museum are $13.50 for adults and $7 for ages 10 and younger.
Jay Humphreys, spokesman for the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and the Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau, said that Pirate Soul is the top pirate museum in the world and a coup for the city.
“I don’t think they were courted by the city at all,†Humphreys said. “To Pat Croce, I don’t think there’s a better location in the United States. And it’s one of the few places in America where you can look out the window and see where pirates attacked the city.â€
The museum is a block away from the Spanish Quarter, where the city plans to build a new museum dedicated to the history of St. Augustine. It’s expected to be dedicated in 2015, in time for the city’s 450th anniversary.

ninjas are better
Seems like Pirates & Ghosts have become big business for historic towns over the last decade.
^ You got that right! And I'll miss the indians too.
Still, looks like it could be an interesting collection. I'd love to see one of the remaining Jolly Roger flags.
Talk like a pirate day will be a much bigger deal now!

I think this is great news for St Aug
Perfect for St Augustine. There is a rich pirate history of this area anyway. Why not exploit it and the tourists.
I wonder if history will one day allow for modern day (i.e. Somali) pirates to garner so much respect....... ;)
They don't wear the cool outfits, have peg legs, pet parrots, or sweet accents. I don't count them as TURE pirates. :)
Or a ride at Disneyland.
Now if only Jacksonville would exploit there French history and bring Marti Gras here that would be a money maker.
What kind of movies do pirate's like?
Aaaar Rated!
What is a Pirate's favorite movie series?
STARRRRRR WARRRRRRS!
that was a stretch lol
Its a rather old joke. from a long time ago and far far away
Makes me want to cover my buccaneers. ;D
LOL
What did captain hook die from?
Jock Itch
I prefer ninjas, but a pirate museum would be awesome. I haven't been to St Aug in far too long.
I am sure that some ninja museums are around...you just cant find em
You might be able to find them but they happen to disappear in a flash of light and smoke
The Fart of a Ninja is a million times deadlier than the venom of a rattlesnake. With the right wind, a single fart can wipe out a small village.
Why do all pirates have eyepatches?
Chuck Norris.
I was missing the pirate jokes so I figured I'd shuffle this back to the top: Looks like The St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum (not Pirate Soul?)is still on track for November. According to this recent link/update, they've already shut down the Key West attraction & have begun moving the "collection" to St. Augustine. They also indicated that there would be an interactive replica ship within the museum - Isn't there something similar in the Welcome Center (or somewhere in town)? Regardless, it should be pretty entertaining & family friendly.

Maybe they'll open up an ARRRRRRRbyyy's next door.
Sorry!
But you know the Pirate Musuem will be a good fit. The indians will be missed but those statues always creeped me out a bit.
Good for them. Appropriate for St. Aug.

It would be very accurate to the history of the pirates (everywhere) and buccaneers (Caribbean Sea, from the french word for BBQ, a particular method of cooking used by these boys AND GIRLS).
Today we piss and moan about the Somali pirates and with good reason, they are thief's as well as heartless killers. Isn't that funny? Back in the day, the old pirates were thief's and heartless killers, and today they are heroes.
The major leagues of pirates was actually 1. Off the coast of the mouth of the Red Sea, and 2. The Caribbean, which was never quite as rich.
The "old" Somali pirates were mostly colonials who came to raid the riches of the Sultan being shipped as tribute to India, the remains of the Khan Empire. The vessels were called "East Indiamen" and they literally stole $Millions. At the peak of that era there was even a pirate kingdom in which some rogue set himself up as "King" and his crew as Lords of Madagascar.
The truth is more exciting then the fiction. OCKLAWAHA
Actually due to our deep harbor, we could easily moor a large pirate vessel of the 1700's alongside a modern Somali pirate vessel (which I'm certain the USN would be glad to deliver!) downtown at the Maritime Museum. With promotion of the St. Augustine Museum and they promoting our floating museum, both cities would stand to benefit.

Yes, the Visitors Center does have a mock up of a 16th century ship.
The renovations for the museum are moving along nicely and look to be on pace for a November opening. Couple this with the proposed revamping of the "colonial district" along the bayfront, the strip is going to be nicely jazzed up and better connected.
Long John Silver's would be a good restaurant for the attraction. I would go, just to eat!
