We are shooting for Feb 26th and wanting to make it a monthly occurance every 4th Friday.

We had an amazing meeting last night and Sarah and I are excited to get started! Stephen and the team have been amazing. Hoping this crawl will bring lots of new faces to downtown!  ;D

That is some of the coolest news I have heard in a long time.  I love the idea to make this an every month occurance too.  Artwalk the first Wednesday and Pub crawl on the last Friday of each month....  Beautiful!!  Best of luck getting this together.

Let me start off by stating that even though I work downtown and my exposure to the Bay Street nightlife consists of attending one happy hour at Mark’s although I have drank at the landing on multiple occasions. I was impressed with the amount of people I saw on Bay Street that night but I am just normally dissuaded of going out downtown by my desire to drink closer to home (St John’s County).

Having said that, I have been following the progress of Lit and Dos Gator on the MetJax boards and want to expand my horizons with the other Bay Street locales as well. The creation of a monthly pub crawl is enough of a motivator for me to want to attend the inaugural crawl and I have already persuaded a few co-workers to join me. The theory of “…and they’ll tell one person and then they’ll tell one person…” is what downtown needs to continue to grow so I wholeheartly support this event.

Lastly, I went to college in Upstate NY and my school had a main street with over 30 bars on it. There was a tradition called the Bridge Street Run that involved everyone stopping at each establishment, having at least one drink in each bar and having their t-shirt signed by the bartender (as well as their drunk friends). Now I am not encouraging hordes of drunks wandering downtown (insert your own joke) but I think that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to plagiarize the event and sell “Bay Street Run” or “Cowford Crawl” t-shirts that people have signed all night similar to the Art Walk Passports. It the shirts weren’t cheesy, they may be decent enough to sell year round as decent downtown Jax souvenirs. My $.02.

From UrbanDictionary.com:

Bridge Street Run

Annual event held the last weekend before final exams in Oswego, New York. College students at SUNY Oswego dress in white t-shirts and are armed with sharpie markers as they visit each of the many bars on Bridge Street. The object is have a beer and sign some shirts before moving on to the next bar and to make it all the way up Bridge Street before passing out. Everyone gets drunk and has a crazy time, only the strong complete the entire run.

"How far did you get on the Bridge Street Run?"
"Oh man, I didn't make it past Old City before passing out."

What's up with the Cowford thing? I'm a Yankee, so maybe I'm missing out on something. It's funny that as much as I'm always out downtown, I've never bumped into anyone from the boards.

Jacksonville used to be called "Cowford" back in the day. Cows were forded across river in downtown at the foot of Liberty St and the river. There's an historical placard near the county courthouse giving all the detail.

The place where the cows were forded across the river was called cow ford.

Its like saying that we used to be called Boat Slip or Ferry Landing.   I know its a popular expression but its just a tall tale.

Before it was Jacksonville it was actually Hansontown.

Didn't know that and I'd heard about 'cowford' years ago... good info.

Jacksonville was never called cowford back in the day.

The historical marker near the Courthouse (mentioned above) implies otherwise:

"This narrow part of the St. Johns River, near a clear freshwater spring was a crossing point for Indians and early travelers. The Indian name Wacca Pilatka, meaning "Cow's Crossing", was shortened by the English to Cow Ford, and Jacksonville was known by this name for many years. This crossing was used by the English when they made an old Timucuan Indian Trail into King's Road."

And this from Wikipedia:  "The settlement that became Jacksonville was founded in 1791 as Cowford, so named because of its location at a narrow point in the river where cattle once crossed."

I did a pub crawl in Rome where they were just recruiting visitors off the street. It was one of my best nights doing the European backpacking thing. The rest of my week in Rome when we went out at night it was to the bars we liked on that crawl. I wish we had something like that the recruited at the Landing.

I'm excited to hear this is coming to fruition!  It would be nice if we could get a street performer to light up the night air, like that saxophone player that is occasionally downtown but always at Jags games.  Maybe not him specifically because for whatever reason he only plays christmas jingles, but somebody... and i'm not talking baby making music, but light and fresh.  Feel free to shoot this idea down.

I was not aware that A) the "district" existed, or B) what made up the district.

I have heard it called E town, and all sorts of other kitschy names, but Bay Street district I guess some how missed me.

Hey Everyone,

We met with Mark (Mark's/Dive Bar) tonight since he was unable to attend last night's meeting with Dustin (LIT), Lee (Ivy) and Jason (Dos Gatos). The meetings both nights went very well and several ideas were thrown around. More details will follow very soon, but here's a quick summary to ease the curiousity (and perhaps create more).

Bars included so far:
Mark's, Dive Bar, TSI, Ivy, LIT, Dos Gatos, & Poppy Love Smoke

The pub crawl will now take place every 3rd Thursday instead of every 4th Friday. Thursdays need more attention at the bars and will allow more focus to be given to "crawlies". We're planning a dry run for our forum readers in two weeks (Feb 25th) at 8PM, so mark your calendars! The dry run will be used to gather feedback from both parties (bar owners/patrons).

Like I said, more details will follow very soon...  ;)

Sorry to hear that! That is really early.

Since the bar owners want it on a Thursday, & a lot of people do have to work the next day, we are changing the times. We'll start early like the Art Walk or a lot of downtown Happy Hours. We'll do 6-12. You can come, just cut out a little early!  ;)   It's what I do. I'd rather go to an event & just leave a little early than not go at at.

I know Thursday is a bit harder for some than the weekend, but realistically, it makes sense.  The Bay Street area really doesn't need a lot of help on the weekends (not that they would turn it down of course), but Thursday is a harder night to get people out on.

Understood.  I guess my thought process was to get NEW people who party in other places to discover the downtown scene... building up a Thursday night clientele comes when people know the clubs etc.

But what the heck do I know??  I can support the scene on Fridays and Saturdays... ;)

We plan to market the heck out of the pub crawl and attract new poeple to downtown nightlife. I know several people who work downtown and go home to the beach and stay. They've never been out downtown (sad). If people come out on a Thursday evening after work they will get introduced to the nightlife and hopefully come back on weekends.

Downtown nightlife can exist, so long as it is entertaining and relatively devoid of cocaine.

Post by: subro on February 15, 2010, 02:02:05 PM
I understand the desire of the bar owners but I think that having the crawl on Thursdays is short-sighted. People who go out and have a blast at a bar that has a good crowd on a Friday are more likely to have fun and go back then if they go out on a Thursday and see the same bar on a slow night. I am not saying that you need a crowd to recognize potential in a bar as too many people can even ruin a good time but it usually makes for a better time then seeing a bar on a slow night.

I am not sure that I am making myself clear but regardless, I will be there.
Title: Re: Downtown Pub Crawl.
Post by: Captain Zissou on February 15, 2010, 02:26:02 PM
I like the Thursday evening idea.  Many people are willing to go out on a Thursday, especially if its happy hour.  i think if the bar owners price this well there will be a very strong following.  Friday and Saturday nights would compete with other goings on around town, and the bars would be full regardless.

To have it be a unique event I think Thursday makes sense.  I voted in the poll, but I think this thread has more input so I posted here.

It's been a while since I've seen any of the bars downtown 'packed' on a Friday night. Saturday nights however is a different story. Maybe my idea of a crowd is different from others though. I pretty much agree with what Bridgetroll and subro stated. However, I'd be willing to support whatever the group agrees upon.

I remember going to new wave night at Annie Tiques and Thunderbirds - guess that new wave is today's old wave? Ouch.

Thursday night was and still is one of the biggest nights to go out for students - was for me and is now for my 21 year old son.

I like the idea of the Thursday at 6 happy hour pub crawl but think that some decent happy hour specials will be critical to the pub crawl's ultimate success

I agree.  Marks has a great happy hour and is quite busy Thursday and Friday nights.  Pizza and wings from Northstar helps too... 8)

Speaking of great happy hours, how about having a listing of happy hours (including drink specials) on Metro Jacksonville?

And Stephen, I'm still a thursday nighter myself but my weeknights must necessarily end earlier than they used to - which unfortunately means I don't get to see as many bands as I used to...

I'm definitely not old enough to have gone to Thunderbirds - at least, I wasn't old enough then ;)

yeah, thats true, but thats a specific subcultural tradition.  That crowd of kids has been going out on Thursday nights (to basically one bar or another) for about 30 years now.

Buckethead may remember when Thursday night was new wave night, first at Annie Tiques and then at Thunderbirds.
I remember quite a bit of that. I was a shy kid, but somehow managed to fit right in at those venues.

Anybody remember Mr Happy?

How many miles of snow did you guys have to walk through in your bare feet to get to the bars back then? :-)

I guess Im still a Tuesday Nighter as well because of quarter beer night at Docksides and the Campus Corner days.   I just end up going to TSI Karoake instead.

What a good time Tuesdays were that was the cheapest beer the world has ever know I think docksides made a fortune at a quarter a cup. We would order by the tray full. Pounding headaches were always the result and yet every tuesday we would be back.

When did Thunderbirds close?

I worked at Hendersons right before it closed and was 'reborn', but Im sure that was well after Thunderbird days.
Thunderbirds was the place off Arlington Expressway right?  Had like three clubs in one hotel.. now a church?

I voted Thursday, most of you campaigning for Fridays/Saturdays are actually backing up the club owner's desires for more Thursday business.

Ahhh....tax day! I think most people will need a drink or two to celebrate the tax season being over. The Ivy is ready to celebrate the First Official Pub Crawl.
