QuoteMayor John Peyton's bid to bring artists downtown by adding lower-cost housing options got a warm reception Tuesday from remodeling contractors at the Northeast Florida Builders Association.
Peyton, who requested the meeting, has made creating a residential community for artists a top priority for his remaining 18 months in office. Artists are moving downtown to open galleries, and getting them to live near those galleries would attract downtown retail, Peyton has said.
For example, a building that has a gallery on the ground floor but a vacant second floor would be the kind of situation where renovating the upper floor for housing could attract artists.
Jeff Brecko, chairman of the remodelers council for the builders association, said the council listened to Peyton's plan with interest and will participate in future meetings to offer expertise.
"Our downtown is worthy of more traffic, and historically speaking, artist communities have been a strong urban draw," he said after the meeting.
Brecko, vice president of Aurora Custom Homes and Remodeling, said each building poses different challenges. Some obstacles are installing sprinklers, removing asbestos lead abatement and improving accessibility. He said historic buildings are granted relief from many issues related to building code requirements if the building's safety and structural strength won't be affected.
He said future meetings will focus on the demographic profile of residents and how marketable the space would be.
Peyton is meeting with different groups about his downtown plan as he works on policies to promote redevelopment, said spokeswoman Misty Skipper.
Skipper said when Peyton talked to artists during a recent Art Walk tour, "many of the artists said they would love to live downtown where the galleries are but can't afford to."

Cool :o
they need to advertise it
Good golly, man.
It's like he's seen the light and he's trying to cram as much in as he can before he leaves office.
Better late than never! I love it!
That is a really great idea. I hope it works.

Its a well used political ploy. Since the majorty of American's attention span is that of a nat, he will do his best to do good so when and if he does endourse someone for whatever reason it will look better with a fresh membory of
"Well when he left he did this and this and that and YAY"
Everyone in politics has a hidden motive. EVERYONE.
Only thing that can save Peyton is if he legalizes weed by the end of this term.
meh, I like the Peytons. They have been nice to me, I'd vote for him again ;D

Is that from your vast experience with politicians, sportsmotor?
It seems a little cliche.
Well since I am studing politics and givin the history of many Yes.
Now whatever your personal problem is with me get over it you are making yourself look like a crying child with your personal attacking posts ;)
As the majorty of lawyers, and you did what you like to do take things Out of Context are snakes in the grass.
The context of my anti-lawyerism was toward the frivolous lawsuits which he was suggesting to have filed against you, granted I was admittedly grouping them all.
I never said anything once against Republicans, Democrats ever.
and yes the majorty of politicans are doing things for personal gain. If they gain helping or doing something favorable they will if they gain more doing not well look at bush.
Here goes another attempt at using the 680' Public Pier on the Northbank next to Berkman Plaza for the immediate creation of 10 businesses and bringing vibrancy to Dist.7 and this part of the St. Johns River our American Heritage River.
Imagine the ART container. As artists flood downtown this ART container can be used on a rotating basis for anyone who wants to display their art. It can be next to the hot dog container.
Did anyone attend when Fred Kent was the keynote speaker when Visit Jacksonville announced their new marketing name?
His idea was to create 10 things to do in a Public place and then watch the vibrancy move outward.
I emailed councilman Gaffney about this. Haven't heard back yet.
Anybody feeling it?

As the majortymajority of lawyers (grammar?), and you did what you like to do take things Out of Context are snakes in the grass.(this sentence lacks the proper number of verbs and prepositions to make any sense.)
The context of my anti-lawyerism was toward the frivolous lawsuits which he was suggesting to have filed against you, granted I was admittedly grouping them all. (verb tense agreement, run on sentence, unclear meaning.)
I never said anything once against Republicans, (or) Democrats(,) ever. (use of both 'once' and 'ever' unecessary.)
and yes the majortymajority of politicans are doing things for personal gain. If they gain helping or doing something favorable they will if they gain more doing not well look at bush. (im sorry, this sentence is chaos. Please elucidate)

The troll being trolled, then responding to it.
Priceless
Peyton is an idiot, but he is pushing everything in the last 18 months to get stuff to stick to the wall and create a legacy. He has no money, next year's budget deficit will be worse than last. He is an idiot of a leader and we all know it, so why is everyone drinking the Kool-Aid thinking he can get THIS passed, when the city has no money for toilet paper at City Hall?
"I emailed councilman Gaffney about this. Haven't heard back yet."
- he has someone respond for him most of the time.

He has $24mm and plans to spend it.
FSU you are right about that. Still haven't heard back. The 3 pieces of legislation in three different council districts Jones, Redman, and Gaffney will be in Finance Thurs. After that they can be voted on and passed at the next city council meeting.
Gaffney can offer an ammendment to put some of the $8.2 million toward the 680' Public Pier. Any amount will show the citizens of Jacksonville and more importantly that the Peyton administration is serious about economic opportunity and Public Access to the St. Johns River.
tufsu, How about the power of 10 containers for Public spaces?
This can legislatively occur next week.
Saw todays editorial by William Cessary. Development is on the horizon. What would he say about an ART container on the Public pier and a tie in with the former library with an Art connection.
I'll try and find out.
Anybody feeling it?
Lets Fix It Now
QuoteHe has $24mm and plans to spend it.
Actually none of that money is earmarked for fixing downtown buildings
QuoteThe money will be divided into three main projects: $11.9 million to repair the Southbank Riverwalk; $8.2 million for the first phase of enhancements to Metropolitan Park; and $3.2 million to fix and landscape Friendship Fountain.
- Florida Times Union, January 8, 2010.
Again, another "building block" Mr. Mayor, for the next Mayor get caught in.
Looks like Peyton has finally discovered Richard Florida.

Doesn't Mr. Florida have a new idea about how to spur growth, or predict where it will be sustained?

What will this geography look like? It will likely be sparser in the Midwest and also, ultimately, in those parts of the Southeast that are dependent on manufacturing. Its suburbs will be thinner and its houses, perhaps, smaller. Some of its southwestern cities will grow less quickly. Its great mega-regions will rise farther upward and extend farther outward. It will feature a lower rate of homeownership, and a more mobile population of renters. In short, it will be a more concentrated geography, one that allows more people to mix more freely and interact more efficiently in a discrete number of dense, innovative mega-regions and creative cities. Serendipitously, it will be a landscape suited to a world in which petroleum is no longer cheap by any measure. But most of all, it will be a landscape that can accommodate and accelerate invention, innovation, and creationâ€"the activities in which the U.S. still holds a big competitive advantage. http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200903/meltdown-geography
