As many of you know, because of the city's willful abrogation of all responsibility for protecting the historic 1910 Fire Station #5, this cool old building is facing imminent demolition. (Background here http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2009-12-06/story/jacksonville_must_move_fire_station_5_or_demolish_it) (http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2009-12-06/story/jacksonville_must_move_fire_station_5_or_demolish_it))
Some Riverside Residents have built a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jacksonville-FL/Help-Save-Old-Fire-Station-No-5/280035175624? (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jacksonville-FL/Help-Save-Old-Fire-Station-No-5/280035175624?) in an effort to light a fire under the effort to save the Brooklyn building. Please consider joining the cause by signing a petition http://www.thepetitionsite.com/3/help-save-old-fire-station-no-5 (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/3/help-save-old-fire-station-no-5) urging the city to protect this century-old building. It has long-served its community, and could continue to do so through adaptive reuse. Thanks!

I signed it earlier, so far not a lot of signatures.
cant save everythign old :/
then there wont be room for anything new!
*gets the TNT* lets scrub it 8)
This is the LAST standing historical building in what was one of our city's earliest platted developments. Brooklyn is, by and large, GONE. What a pity if we allow the city to wipe out the last trace of what once was one of Jacksonville's original and most vibrant neighborhoods. I can understand the hesitation about the city expending any effort at all when there are so many other pressing needs; my only counter would be, show me how the city's previous eagerness to tear down JAX's historical structures hasn't, in the end result, only exacerbated the problem.
just signed the petition.

We still have FS 14 and FS 2 downtown, and we did save FS 1 and turn it into a private residence. So far the group has NO city council person lined up, no support from the mayor or anyone with the MONEY $$$ necessary to move the buidling. So aside from ifs and buts, the group has nothing to save the building. My advice would be to find some council people and some money and get it moved ASAP.
Signed and tweeted :)

I dint like the IF ITS OLD LETS SAVE IT mentality that seems to be rampit here. Nor do I like to see abounded buildings everywhere because no one can decide what to do with them or have the money to turn them into something.
Smash it down build something up to date up to code and Modern.
Sportsmotor, that's how we got where we are. It's not a good idea.

Agree. I wanted to sign the petition , but it indicates "Petition closed" ?
Brooklyn has so many vacant lots within blocks of the station's current location... due to the razing of nearly everything there. Brooklyn Park is not happening....so why not move the building a few blocks and replace something that was probably in hindsight, needlessly torn down.?

Where was/is FS 1? Springfield?
The Catherine Street Fire Station was moved to Metro Park/Kids Kampus as a musuem(adjacent to Special Events Office)

The Central Fire Station was converted into a private residence and is next to Burrito Gallery across from the old Hayden Burns Library. It has a gorgeous loft area upstairs.

Fidelity has no interest in making use of the building?
Not at all. And I guess everyone has entitlement to their opinion , but obviously there are those that would see it demolished because it is sitting empty. or because it is old. take your pick. If FS 5 were falling apart, I would say, even though Im pro-historic, let it go..but it is not.. It has been well maintained. To move this building would probably cost a bit more than demolishing but IF one were building an identical structure to it, then I personally think this justifies the cost of moving it somewhere close by. Will it happen? Probably not under the current administration as it is obvious they never meant to save it. Will Fidelity save it?? I do not have an answer to that.. but they could be the hero of the hour , and get very good publicity by moving the building.. as to a location...take your pick because Brooklyn is FULL of EMPTY spaces. Jeez just the money spent to raze buildings for projects that were never to come to fruction alone ,would easily justify moving this tiny little house a few blocks. I do not know what all is left that is historic in Brooklyn but I belive that building is the LAST on Riverside in Brooklyn that is historic.. Theres School 4, a couple of houses across the street from it , on College, and not a hell of alot else. If these structures arent saved, it is a travesty.. As to M-Train and Sport motor's opinions, Fine... I get it... but Brooklyn has nearly nothing left.. so I cannot and do not agree with your positions on these buildings.
