Pier 1 Imports will close its 14-year-old store at 9047 Southside Blvd. Feb. 24 in keeping with a corporate plan to return to profitability, a company spokeswoman said.
Pier 1 Public Relations Coordinator Harriet Burrow said individual stores in the chain are being rated on a case-by-case basis for performance, and that only the Southside Blvd. store was closed as a result. Five stores in the Jacksonville area and one in St. Augustine will remain open.
Burrow said the company is confident that the Pier 1 store at 4643 River City Dr., Suite 101 in the St. Johns Town Center will meet customer demand for the area.
Burrow said Pier 1 will make “every effort†to place employees from the affected store in other area locations.
The chain's efforts are beginning to pay off, she noted; it posted a profitable third quarter, its best showing since 2004.
Another suburban blight in the making! Everyone should have seen this coming, saying the SJTC can serve the market.
That whole center needs a serious update anyways. Hopefully the owners will revamp it soon. They should tear down the current Target and rebuild it as a Super Target.
The S&K also closed last year when the company went out of business. There is an empty space at the front of the plaza where T-Birds/Kirklands have been. The Five Guys is going to lonely.
Agree on the Super Target comment.
This is the only store closing that wasn't related to a company going out of business, so it isn't exactly the same kind of store closing. That center is so huge and in a way hidden from the road, and I guess the gigantic parking lot is sort of intimidating.
That said, it isn't getting any easier over there, especially with Avenues Walk being built and a few stores in The Avenues empty.
The Home Depot is sort of hidden too.
Pier 1 has been closing for years. Every six months they have a "store closing, everything must go!" sale.
This is an actual closing though this time.
That place is a bear to get in and out of, especially if you live nearby. At least there was some connection to neighborhoods directly behind it, but anyone else had to deal with the alternating SS Parking Lot/Speedway traffic.
